Too often, organisations only hear about cultural safety issues when something has already gone wrong. But many Aboriginal people carry experiences of feeling unheard, judged, misunderstood, or culturally unsafe long before a formal complaint is ever made.

Many Aboriginal people do speak up — but not everyone feels safe, supported, or confident enough to raise concerns.

There are many reasons why Aboriginal people may choose not to report culturally unsafe experiences, including:
• fear of not being believed
• fear of judgement or repercussions
• previous negative experiences with systems and services
• mistrust due to historical and ongoing systemic issues
• emotional exhaustion from constantly having to explain cultural experiences
• feeling like nothing will change anyway

This is why cultural capability and cultural safety matter.

But cultural capability is not a one-off training session, a certificate, or a yearly compliance task.
It is lifelong learning.

It requires ongoing reflection, listening, accountability, relationship-building, and a willingness to continue learning long after the training ends.
