Did you know that roughly one-third of the world’s food is never eaten?
Last week as part of Melbourne Connect Innovation Week, students from across Melbourne gathered with industry experts to tackle real-world challenges and contribute to a more sustainable future.
A big congratulations to the winning team, "Up-farming", who proposed a comprehensive solution to "moving farmers up the waste hierarchy" to help combat food waste and loss.

Join us for The Australian Food Waste Hackathon on 4 September, 2-5pm, at Melbourne Connect. Collaborate with industry experts, tackle real-world challenges, and contribute to a sustainable future.
Rocket Seeder is hosting “The Australian Food Waste Hackathon” as part of Innovation Week at the Melbourne Connect Co-working space. We’re inviting students to participate in this exciting event.
Did you know that roughly one-third of the world’s food is never eaten? By reducing food loss and waste, we can significantly reduce the land and resources needed for food production, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and help close the 60% gap between the food available today and the food needed by 2050.
The Australian Food Waste Challenge is an initiative directly aligned with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 12.3, which aims to halve food loss and waste by 2030. The challenge features real-world problems set by sponsors like SecondBite, OzHarvest, Foodbank Australia, Coles Group, Dairy Australia, Hort Innovation, Goodman Fielder, Harmony Agriculture and Food Company Pty Ltd, MSC, AIP, RMCG, Australian Dairy Products Federation (ADPF), the Gardiner Foundation, and End Food Waste Australia.
This event is a fantastic opportunity for students to develop innovative solutions to these pressing challenges alongside industry experts. It also offers visibility into the global Enactus program.
We’re calling on students to join us at Melbourne Connect on 4 September from 2-5pm. There will be pizza, snacks, and drinks available for all attendees. Don’t miss out on this chance to make a difference and innovate for a sustainable future!

The circular economy is reshaping how we think about sustainability. Unlike the traditional linear model of ‘take, make, dispose,’ the circular economy emphasises reducing waste, reusing resources, and regenerating natural systems. In the agrifood sector, this approach is critical as we face increasing pressure to produce more food sustainably while minimising environmental impacts.
Why do Agrifood Innovations Matter?
Agrifood innovations are pivotal in addressing the circular economy’s goals and aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Here’s how:
Reducing Food Waste (SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production): Food waste is a significant issue, with nearly a third of all food produced globally going to waste. Innovations in food tech can reduce this waste by improving storage, enhancing supply chain efficiencies, and repurposing surplus food.
Optimising Supply Chains (SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure): Efficient supply chains are essential for minimising resource use and waste. Agrifood technologies can enhance traceability, reduce transportation emissions, and ensure that food reaches consumers in optimal condition.
Sustainable Production (SDG 2: Zero Hunger and SDG 13: Climate Action): From precision agriculture to alternative proteins, innovations in agrifood can make food production more sustainable. These technologies help reduce the use of water, fertilisers, and pesticides, contributing to a healthier environment.
Join us for a panel discussion on “Agrifood Solutions Addressing Circular Economy Challenges” on July 23 from 12-1pm. We will explore case studies from the Australian market and hear from experts about the environmental and economic impacts of these innovations.

PEAK Pasture and Livestock are one of the 9 participants in the fourth cohort of our Victorian AgTech Seeds program which is supporting the creation of early-stage Agtech startups by bringing together aspiring agtech entrepreneurs and researchers creating technology for the Victorian agriculture sector and beyond.
PEAK Pasture & Livestock is developing an online program to help livestock producers plan their annual activities (e.g. agronomy, animal health, water, fencing). Once the required products are entered, the program automatically calculates their total required products and links this information directly to their preferred retailer.
