Hi folks,

For anyone who is interested in guerrilla gardening, food sovereignty, and the decommodification of healthy, organic food - there is a new collective recently formed called 'radical roots'.

They have just started a community garden in Coburg (at De Chene Reserve) and welcome anyone! If you are particularly interested in grassroots-led social movements and the intersections between food, land, power, collective liberation, and socio-ecological wellbeing - this may just be the collective for you!

Check out their instagram (Guerrilla Gardening Naarm - link below), or come along to one of their weekly working bees / hang-outs. Each Saturday morning @ 10am.

Edible Weeds of Darebin Parklands 🌼

Foraging is one of my favourite things to do during lockdown. Last year I was making prickly pear juice and hawthorn berry fruit leather. This year I’ve focused more on wild edible greens. Edible w**ds are abundant, tasty and often extremely nutritious. This is a short list of the edible w**ds I spotted on my daily walk in and around Darebin Parklands. Let me know if you can spot any of these on your next walk. We’ll be hosting an edible w**ds zoom workshop in the coming weeks so please come along to that if you’d like to learn more!

*Weeds in order of appearance*

1. Cleaver: Growing amongst the grass. Feels sticky and will cling to your clothes, hence the name. Needs to be cooked or is great in a smoothie.

2. Dandelion: The leaves, flower and root are all edible and highly nutritious.

3. Wild Fennel: Great for tea or in cooking. Seeds and pollen can also be harvested.

4. Mallow: Very abundant. You’ll see this one anywhere. Use it as you would spinach. Becomes mucilaginous when cooked.

5. Oxalis or Wood Sorrel: Has a deliciously sour stem with a lemony taste. Use the leaves or the flowers in a salad! Contains oxalic acid so should be consumed in moderation. Oxalic acid is present in many foods we eat every day. Still worth doing a little research before you harvest.

6. Wild Onion Grass: Looks like grass, tastes and smells like spring onion. Is triangular in shape and has delicate white flowers. Tends to grow in wet, shady areas.

When foraging the golden rule is to never eat anything you can’t identify with 1000% certainty. If you wouldn’t feel comfortable giving it to a loved one - don’t eat it yourself! Also be mindful of where you’re foraging. Has it recently been sprayed? Is it right by a road or a potentially contaminated waterway? I wouldn’t have eaten many of the w**ds in this video for that reason! Look up ‘How to forage in Melbourne’ to make sure you’re doing it safely. Or come along to our workshop. Hope to see you soon!

Winter abundance. One of many wheelbarrows of Ruby Grapefruit harvested from a tree in Kew by one of our volunteers. We love citrus season. MUC Garden is a little too shady to support healthy citrus, but there are some lemons and makrut limes in a sunny spot near by. 🍊🍋 So many fabulous events coming up this semester! Stay tuned. And… us green thumbs are up-skilling on our social media use, so we will be posting more mini gardening skills tutorials this semester! 🌱
