Over the next two weeks, students across Australia will receive invitations to take part in the 2026 National Student Safety Survey.

The survey asks students about their perceptions and experiences of sexual violence and harm.

The survey is being conducted independently by Roy Morgan on behalf of Universities Australia, with input from Professor Kate Fitz-Gibbon.

The survey is for all eligible students, whether or not they have experienced sexual violence or harm. Participation is voluntary and confidential, and individual responses will not be shared with universities.

Support is available before, during and after participation. The National Student Safety Survey Counselling Line provides free and confidential support from trained counsellors and is independently provided by Full Stop Australia. The service is available 24/7 on 1800 572 224.

We stand with the University of Queensland Union.

UQ’s threats to UQU’s funding are an attack on independent student unionism everywhere. Students rely on a strong, independent union that can stand up to university management.

An attack on one student union is an attack on us all.

Some good news out of the University of Canberra, with a commitment that the University will explore the establishment of an Independent Student Union.

Every student deserves a strong, independent union that can advocate for them, represent them and hold their university to account.

Every campus should have an independent student union, run by students and accountable to students.

Today I appeared before the Senate inquiry into higher education funding reforms.

Student poverty is getting worse, and fixing it means going further. We need to reverse Job-ready Graduates, tackle the housing crisis and raise Youth Allowance so students can actually afford to live while they study.

Needs-based funding is an important reform, but we cannot make university more accessible without addressing the cost of being a student.

Yesterday, thousands of students across the country protested against Pauline Hanson and her politics of racism and division.

One Nation has tried to turn racism into a political platform, scapegoating migrants and minorities for problems they did not cause. Their politics offer nothing to students struggling with the cost of living, housing and student debt.

One Nation cannot go unanswered. Students will keep organising against Hanson and the racist politics she represents.

Barnaby Joyce says we “hate this country”.

Standing against racism doesn’t mean you hate Australia.

It means refusing to accept a politics that divides people, attacks migrants and minorities, and treats racism as normal.

Today, students across the country are standing against Pauline Hanson’s politics of racism and division.

There is no place for her racist politics on our campuses or in our communities.

Tomorrow, students across the country are protesting Pauline Hanson and One Nation.

One Nation is a racist, far-right party. They attack migrants and minorities, target international students and oppose making education more affordable.

Students and workers are struggling with soaring rents, debt and the cost of living. Hanson’s response is to scapegoat migrants and minorities and try to divide students and workers against each other.

Students have a responsibility to fight the rise of the far right.

Universities should be accountable to the people who study and work in them.

A Victorian Parliamentary Committee has recommended major reforms to make university governance more transparent and democratic.

The recommendations include guaranteeing at least two elected students and three elected staff on every university council, publishing council agendas and key decisions, increasing transparency around consultancy spending and Vice-Chancellor remuneration, and strengthening governance across the sector.
