Class of 2022 alumna, Isabel Yu, who returned to Ruse to view her HSC Visual Arts major work, which is currently displayed at Reception in Barrengarry House.

Since graduating from Ruse, Isabel is now completing her final year of Actuarial Studies at UNSW.

🎓 Thank you to Class of 2006 Ruse alumnus Dr Alexander Zhang, who joined us as the guest speaker for the 2026 Student Leader Induction Assembly on 28 July 2026.

Drawing on his experiences as an academic achiever, International Physics Olympiad medallist, and now a consultant ENT surgeon, Dr Zhang shared inspiring insights on leadership, character, and the importance of kindness in everyday life. He encouraged students to focus not only on academic success but also on building friendships, resilience, and a strong sense of self.

Reflecting on his time at James Ruse AHS, Dr Zhang spoke about how the values and connections formed during school have remained a constant influence throughout his personal and professional life. He highlighted that true leadership lies in daily acts of care and inclusivity, beyond formal roles. His key message urged students to cherish memories, build character, and look beyond short-term pressures to become the people they aspire to be.

Thank you to Dr Zhang for his heartfelt address and to all our student leaders embarking on their own leadership journey.

For the past 30 years, they've been patiently waiting at James Ruse AHS for you to remember to take them home.

These handcrafted wooden wall-mounted paper roll holders are a true piece of 1990s craftsmanship and a reminder of the skills learned in the workshop.

🌱 Investing in the next generation of agricultural innovators.

The James Ruse AHS Foundation AgriTech Pitch Competition, established in 2023 (originally known as Beyond Agriculture), continues to provide students with opportunities to tackle real-world challenges through innovation, entrepreneurship, and collaboration.

This year's student-led competition challenged 14 teams from Years 7-9 to "Future-proof the Farm" by designing sustainable energy solutions to reduce farmers' reliance on diesel across an entire farming operation. The problem question was written by Class of 1982 Ruse alumnus Alan Macdonald.

Congratulations to our winners:
🏆 The Rice Guys (Year 7): Alex S, Hugh C, Jason Z, and Lawrence A
🥈 The Carrotheads (Year 7): Heeji P, Khadijah I, Nikita C, and Ruby S
🥈 Sprout Nova (Year 8): Avika V, Jacinta W, Olivia D, and Uthrasri B

The winning team received $100 in canteen vouchers.

Thank you to our judging panel, including Foundation Board member and Class of 1998 alumna Li-Anne Tung, alongside Mr Dopierala and Mrs Twomey, for sharing their expertise and encouraging our students.

This initiative is also made possible through student leadership. Thank you to Year 11 Convenors Annabelle Z, Elina F and Heidi K, together with mentors Coco L, Misha H, Neil W and Nicole Z, for delivering workshops and supporting competitors throughout the program.

The Foundation is proud to create opportunities that encourage students to think boldly about the future of agriculture and innovation. Thank you to our alumni and supporters who help make initiatives like this possible.

Friendships old and new at Ruse Alumni Networking Drinks 🥂
What a night at Albion Place Hotel! Last night's Ruse Alumni Networking Drinks brought together graduates spanning six decades — from a proud pioneer of the Class of 1961, pennant and pins in hand, to fresh faces from the Class of 2023.

New friends were made, old contacts reconnected, and yes — plenty of stories were exchanged (we won't repeat it here 👀). Whatever your year, walking back into a room full of Ruse alumni has a way of feeling like coming home.

🎓 Thank you to Class of 1989 Ruse alumnus Senator David Shoebridge, who was our guest speaker for the 2026 JRAHS Social Justice Assembly.

Drawing on his experiences in public service and advocacy, Senator Shoebridge shared powerful reflections on social justice, collective action, and the importance of living a life of purpose. He encouraged students to support one another, stand alongside vulnerable communities, and remember that meaningful progress is achieved together.

Reflecting on his time at James Ruse AHS, he spoke about the role the school played in shaping his confidence, values, and belief in the power of community. He also challenged students to look beyond personal achievement and consider how they can contribute to making the world a fairer, more compassionate place.

The assembly also featured thoughtful addresses from Social Justice Prefect Jingru X and Deputy Principal Ms Melissa Schultz, along with presentations from our student-led social justice groups: Ruse Amnesty International, Rainbow Ruse, Each for Equal, and Interact. Together, they showcased the many ways Ruse students are engaging with issues of equity, inclusion, human rights, service, and advocacy.

Thank you to Senator Shoebridge and all our student leaders for contributing to such an inspiring and thought-provoking event.
