Q&A on ways to fight the climate crisis

Q: I'm an electrician and I know that solar power and renewable energy are the way of the future, and that the future is now. But I've not yet ventured into the renewable energy space. Given the urgency surrounding the climate crisis, what are some ways I can begin addressing the climate crisis in how I run my business today?

That's a great question - we can all play a part in solving these issues. I believe electricians have a unique role in addressing the climate crisis through their work especially by focusing on energy efficiency, sustainable practices, and integrating renewable energy options into the energy plan.

When it comes to energy efficiency, this might mean incorporating energy-efficient lighting, appliances, and even wiring systems. When considering energy sources, it could involve reviewing how renewable energy sources, such as solar panels or energy storage solutions, could be integrated into your work. To do this means that we look for ways to solve customer problems, and it's also an opportunity to lead the dialogue and drive change.

I see this as a two-pronged approach: use your expertise and experience to effect change through your methods, systems, processes and tools. Additionally, use your insights to support your customers, through education and advocacy. When customers are supported in this way, they may feel more comfortable about embracing change.

Much like how AI is transforming many industries and roles, renewable energy may pose challenges for those in more traditional sectors. However, rather than reject these developments, we can remain open to how they can bring positive change not only to society at large but also within our professional lives and industry.
