Science Week 2026 celebrates the theme“Seeds of Science: Nurturing Knowledge for All”, encouraging students to explore how curiosity, inquiry and shared learning help ideas grow into new discoveries and innovations. Just as seeds need the right conditions to flourish, scientific knowledge grows when we ask questions, investigate the world around us and share our learning with others.

Throughout Science Week, the children become young scientists through a range of exciting hands-on experiments that bring scientific concepts to life.

This year, the children investigated weather with shaving foam rain clouds, explored density through fireworks in a jar and lava lamps, discovered chemical reactions with fizzy lemons and self-inflating balloons, and examined surface tension with dancing milk. Other experiences included colour-changing water, milk and oil experiments, the colourful Skittle experiment, creating chia seed greenhouses, exploring air pressure, observing fascinating chemical reactions, and investigating the amazing properties of dry ice. These engaging experiments encourage curiosity, creativity and a love of discovery while helping the children connect to the world around them.

Exploring, Creating and Discovering
In the Early Learners Room, we love to build curiosity and creativity by providing learning experiences that encourage sensory exploration and offer open-ended learning opportunities for all children.
Adding magnetic shapes to our outdoor play space sparked curiosity and scientific thinking. Each child found their own ways to explore and create using the different shapes. Some chose to stick the magnets to a variety of surfaces, while others chose to transport them from one space to another using a range of different methods.
Working and investigating independently builds self-esteem, encourages curiosity and supports children to develop a deeper understanding of the world around them. Through hands-on exploration, children are empowered to make their own discoveries, test their ideas and engage in meaningful learning through play.

Our mud kitchen has been buzzing with busy little chefs this week!🍋🍊🥕

Using a selection of fresh fruit offcuts from the kitchen, our Preschoolers cooked up a storm, whipping up everything from orange cakes and chocolate chip cookies to hearty lasagnas.

With recipe cards close by, we explored letters, words and print as we “read” and followed our favourite recipes, supporting early language and literacy in a meaningful, hands on way.

The kitchen was filled with chatter, laughter and imaginative role play as we stirred, measured, served and shared our creations, drawing on familiar experiences from home and everyday life.

Beyond the fun of mixing and creating, our mud kitchen offers endless opportunities for language, literacy, maths, scientific thinking, problem solving and imaginative play, all while connecting with nature and celebrating the meaningful experiences children bring into their play.

Exploring Our Senses! 👀👂👃👅✋
In the Transitional Learners Room, we have been exploring our five senses through a range of engaging, hands-on experiences designed to encourage curiosity, communication and investigation.
To explore our sense of smell, we added a variety of scents to our paints and playdough, encouraging us to identify, compare and discuss different aromas. We practised our listening skills through fun sound recognition games, helping us tune in to and identify sounds in their environment.
Our sense of sight was explored through artistic provocations, where we observed colours, patterns and materials to inspire our creativity. We also created a sensory space filled with a range of textures, allowing us to investigate and describe how different materials felt using our sense of touch.
Our favourite activity was exploring the sense of taste through a tasting platter! We bravely sampled a variety of foods and discussed the different flavours they experienced, including sweet, sour, bitter, salty and spicy tastes. Some of the foods we tried included lemons, grapefruit, pretzels, dark chocolate, sweet chilli crisps, plum jam, caramel sauce and turmeric chips. There were lots of interesting facial expressions and thoughtful discussions as we shared their reactions and discovered new favourites!
Through these experiences, we have been building their sensory awareness, developing descriptive language and learning more about how their senses help them understand and interact with the world around them.
