✨Update

The journey of weaving stars through One Billion Stars has always meant more than being crafty with ribbon 🎉 It’s been about people — hands reaching across cultures, hearts finding calm &joy through creativity, and communities remembering what hope feels like when we make it together. 💛

As this global star-weaving movement continues, I’m weaving a new chapter online at www.damperandfetu.com, sharing creative wellbeing, weaving tutorials, and reflections on art, leadership, and life. 🌿 will remain as a legacy gallery — a record of hands, hearts and stories from across the globe.

🌏 I’ll now be focussing my energy on World Star Weaving Day each 2 December — a global celebration of creativity, courage, and connection. I’ll be sharing workshop details and ways to get involved very soon. 💫

As I pour through all the photos, messages, and memories — from local weaving circles, weaving abroad, to moments shared with incredible humans like & so many more, being awarded Redlands Coast Citizen of the Year 2019 - I’m filled with deep gratitude for everyone who has ever picked up ribbon or woven beside me.

Thank you, truly, for being part of this story. The light we’ve created together is everlasting — and it’s guiding the way forward to an exciting and meaningful new chapter.

✨ Stay tuned for details for a World Star Weaving Day workshop with me soon 💖

Love & light, always x

How are you celebrating the 16 Days of Activism at the end of this month?

The global 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is a key international moment to call for an end to violence against women and girls. It runs from 25th November (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) until 10th December, Human Rights Day.

Get together with friends and star weave with your local communities to raise awareness or join us for a fun Star Weaving workshop on Saturday 25 Nov at the Redlands Centre for Women Cleveland QLD. 12pm - 2pm. $70. Bring your favourite drink and we’ll supply snacks and materials.

It’s World Star Weaving Day on Saturday 2 December too so there are lots of opportunities to create weaving spaces for people to come together 🩵

NAIDOC week, 2 - 9 July, is an annual celebration that recognises the history and achievements of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island communities.

It's one of our families favourite times of the year, where it's a Blak Out in Brisbane and there is lots of love in the air for our communities and cultures.

“Do I need to be a star weaver to be part of the One Billion Stars project?”

I get asked this question a lot. And my answer is always:

“Absolutely not.”

In fact, there are so many other important roles in the One Billion Stars project that we need people to focus on so that we can achieve one billion stars by 2032.

We encourage everyone to participate, whatever your work, professional background or expertise is. We do not expect people to know all the different statistics around violence or work in the space of domestic violence, counselling or art therapy. If you have that experience or interest, it’s a bonus, but it’s certainly not required to weave stars with us.

You don’t need to be a star weaver to participate or have any experience in craft, art or weaving.

Learn how to get involved at www.onebillionstars.net and read my latest blog outlining 5 non star weaving ways that you can contribute to one billion stars.

Mental health is something I'm really passionate about.

I love talking about it and doing something about it.

It makes sense to me that building safe and peaceful communities and prioritising mental health are connected and often woven together in our work to weave one billion stars.

Weaving can help us to slow down, process and reconnect with ourselves and our loved ones. Weaving can help us to hold and focus on our personal and community goals because each object we make is a reminder of that value or goal.

Last week I had an online meeting with 2 incredible star weaving leaders who I am also super proud to call my friends, Siobhán McQuillan from Ireland and and Melissa Knight in Austin Texas.

Every time I jump online with these incredible women, I can't help but get emotional and reinvigorated because of the stories & images they share.

It takes a lot of energy, creativity and patience to lead a project like this and it cannot be possible without the courage and vision of phenomenal women like Siobhán and Melissa.

While our catch ups are mostly about talking strategies and plans for our star weaving communities over the next few months, it is also a crucial time for us to touch base and check in and yes, even have a cry and laugh.

It is a huge relief to know that there is someone like Melissa and Siobhán in your corner who you can download with and who will not judge you when you need a break from the stars because they understand what it takes to organise, lead and curate these complex conversations.

Each of us deserves to have a community or village of people around us who supports our crazy ideas and who believes in us unconditionally. That's what this star weaving community is for me.

Yes, we partake in the gentle ancient craft of star weaving but we are also a fierce community diligently working towards more inclusive, safe and loving communities who values mental health & joy over hate and violence. Always.

To your mental health,
Maryann x
