Days away with my youngest daughter who gave me this as an early birthday present. It’s been the most wonderful time with her and a chance to take days off from the garden whilst thoroughly enjoying being spoilt.
It’s times like this that are relaxed, that allow me mental and physical space to just doodle away at things that may not be wonderful art but that give me a little creative outlet

Allowing the leaves to die down before you dig your ginger helps to create bigger fatter ginger roots as the nutrients are distributed from the leaves into the roots for storage

Tomorrow on Saturday, 30 May I’m giving a talk at Annerley Library from 1030 to 12. On growing a garden for pollinators.
It’s such an important topic these days, especially with honeybee populations dwindling.
What can we do to improve pollination in our gardens? - to pollinate our fruit trees, vegetables and other plants in our gardens?

Some of the excitement of seeing seeds germinate! It’s too wet to sow in ground, hence the trays…
I’ve a few trays of poppy seeds here, plus stocks, zinnias and vegies.

The poppy seeds are miniscule so after chilling in the fridge for three weeks, I have mixed them with a little sand and sprinkled it on the top of the potting mix. Water very gently. Keep moist and they will germinate in 5 to 12 days
Poppies typically do not like being transplanted once well established, so I plant these out when they are 1 to 2 cm tall

I just take teaspoonfuls of seedlings and gently pop them into shallow holes in the space they are to grow in.
Easy?

The Sunchokes are big and beautiful this year. These sunchokes, aka Jerusalem Artichokes, are delicious roasted or sliced thinly and pan fried. A good alternative for those on a paleo diet as they have inulin instead of carbs and for diabetics, this means they don’t affect blood sugar levels as potatoes do.
What do they taste like? To me they are a little like a potato and a water chestnut, but they steam or bake bake to a soft consistency with a crispy skin when baked.
They are famous for their puree and soup flavour and much loved by cooks.
I have many kilos and would love you to have some. To grow and cook with.
