My name is Steve Powell and I’m a drummer and teacher living in Brisbane. I have over 25 years playing experience and have taught drums to adults and children for over 15 years. Because I love many styles of music, I aim to give my students experience in and appreciation of these styles as well as teaching them correct drumming technique.

Guess our Beat of the Week! Archie was only given the first 4 bars of this song written out and then had to work out by himself how to play it with 2 handed 16th notes and different 4 bar phrases.

Here's Harrison playing the original version of last week's Beat of the Week "Shake and Fingerpop". A different way to play a fill by keeping the groove going underneath. Not easy to do, but keeps em' dancing!

Ben's debut recording: "Silver Lining" by Laufey. It's not very often a student wants to play a ballad so I broke out the good cymbals for this one! Ben really worked on his dynamics, phrasing and improvisation for this. Well done mate!

Guess our Beat of the Week! It's longer than usual but that didn't stop Liam getting it together with me in 5 mins! Hint: one of my guilty pleasures lately has been listening to "Yacht Rock" and this is a classic from 1979 (hopefully you can't make it out on the TV screen!)

I never know what to expect when Matty turns up to his lesson...last week it was a werewolf mask and we played "Thriller". This week it was a didgeridoo and Farnsy! How Aussie can you get?! Thanks for reminding me not to take myself too seriously mate!

Bittersweet moment for me, saying goodbye to Xavier after 7.5 years as he dedicates himself more to his studies this year. Here he demonstrates perfectly how I sometimes teach songs to students. I only wrote out half of the sheet music for "Even Flow"...intentionally, so that students can learn most of the original drum parts but then have to learn the rest by ear. This means it's not a note perfect interpretation, however they are reading, listening and improvising in the process. It has been my pleasure teaching you Xavier and I hope you continue to play your drums and continue creating great musical moments like we did this day!
