🥣 FORAMEAL INITIATIVE | Camberwell Grammar recently hosted a major emergency meal packing event to support global disaster relief efforts.

Here's a reflection from Alex (Year 11): 'In conjunction with the Rotary Club of Canterbury, around 60 students from Camberwell Grammar and 20 from Presbyterian Ladies' College packed over 13,230 emergency meals containing rice, lentils and oats. Thank you to every student who gave their time, and to Rotary for organising such a meaningful event.'

🇮🇩 INDONESIAN INDEPENDENCE DAY | On Tuesday 18 August, our Indonesian language students celebrated Indonesian Independence Day with a traditional lunch in the Camberwell Room.

Students enjoyed a delicious spread of classic dishes, including Beef Rendang, Nasi Kuning, Ayam Goreng, Bakwan Sayur and lots more. Where time permitted, classes also tried their hand at traditional Independence Day games and sang the Indonesian National Anthem, commemorating the day and reflecting on the nation’s history and long journey to independence.

PARENT ASSOCIATION GALA BALL | Shaken, not stirred—what a spectacular night at the CGS Gala Ball last Saturday!

With sophisticated '007' style on full display, over 450 parents from across our Junior, Middle, and Senior Schools came together for an evening of pure glamour and connection. From the brilliant costumes to the vibrant energy on the dance floor, it was a magnificent celebration of our CGS community.

Special thanks to the CGS Parents’ Association organising committee for their creative vision, tireless planning, and for making it a night to remember!

YEAR 10 CAREERS NIGHT đź’Ľ | Last week, we welcomed returning alumni back to campus for our annual Year 10 Careers Night.

Panellists across fields such as Law, Medicine, Engineering, Tech and the Arts shared their career journeys and fond memories of CGS. Students were deeply engaged, asking thoughtful questions about emerging trends like AI and hearing unique stories, including what it's like to work aboard a Collins-class submarine.

The evening concluded with alumni connecting with former teachers at Kingussie. A big thanks to all our returning alumni for generously sharing their time and expertise with our Year 10 students.

from our School Historian Dr David Bird:

Even in this digital age, the School Diary remains an important part of every student’s kit. These diaries have a long history, and although the date of the first issue is unclear, the Archives hold an “Associated Grammar Schools Note Book” from 1921 – pictured. This booklet was chiefly intended for each student to note his sporting commitments and to record his “Home Work”.

By the 1950s, the “AGS’ Year Book” had evolved to allow space for classroom entries, an “Historical Sketch” and a calendar of coming events. By this time the headmaster was the Reverend Thomas Timpson, an Old Boy and a meticulous manager of school affairs.

Headmaster Timpson also issued each boy with a separate, hardback “Handbook”. This, he stated, was designed “to help you find out quickly the kind of community which you have joined, the way it is organised and the various kinds of activities it enjoys”. The holder could find staff details, an expanded history of the School and its Houses, School Rules and Curriculum Notes, amongst other related items. This “Handbook” was the predecessor of our contemporary Diary and, along with the 1921 Note Book, is an important historical document for our 140th anniversary.

TENNIS ACHIEVEMENT | Congratulations to Rémi (Year 10), who Tennis Victoria recently featured for his incredible work experience placement with their Inclusion team.

Beyond his achievements on the court, including national Para-standing titles and selection for the Australian Open Ballkid squad, Rémi spent the week gaining hands-on experience in sports management, accessibility profiles, and tournament operations. His work on Tennis Victoria’s digital inclusion processes is already leaving a lasting impact.

Rémi's ambition is to advocate for greater disability representation in sports and help pave the way for Para-standing Tennis globally. "Providing opportunities for young people with disability to engage with tennis in any way can transform lives".

CHINESE READING IN ACTION | Last week, four Year 7 students represented Camberwell Grammar School at the 2026 CLTAV Year 7 Chinese Reading Competition at the University of Melbourne.

The largest competition to date, it brought together more than 70 students from 30+ Victorian schools, with an exceptionally high standard of performance.

We are very proud of Brendon, Felix, Hiro and Samuel, who impressed with their enthusiasm, confidence and commitment. A visiting delegation from China’s Center for Language Education and Cooperation also praised their clear and accurate Chinese pronunciation.

HOUSE SWIMMING | The Middle and Senior School House Swimming Competitions this term provided plenty of strong racing, House pride and great participation.

Congratulations to all students who took to the water and contributed points for their House. It was particularly pleasing to see many students step outside their comfort zone, taking on unfamiliar strokes to ensure their House was represented in every event.

A great display of participation, sportsmanship and House spirit.

BLOKES' BREAKFAST 📚 | Following weeks of eager anticipation, the recent Blokes’ Book Breakfast was a resounding success!

Demand was unprecedented, with the event selling out in just two weeks and bringing together 120 Junior to Senior School students, dads and staff. Featured author Jack Heath captivated the room with an engaging presentation and was wonderfully generous with his time, chatting and signing books with our enthusiastic readers.

Thanks to everyone who joined us to make this year's event so memorable. đź“–
