A little peek inside our new-look Koala Room (3-4 Years Old) .

At Mayfield, we recognise that every educator brings their own strengths, experiences, ideas and philosophy to their practice and this means our learning environments don’t all have to look the same.

This week, Michelle has stepped into our Koala Room and has been busy transforming the space to reflect her own philosophy and approach to early childhood education, drawing inspiration particularly from the Curiosity Approach and Reggio Emilia principles.

At the heart of Michelle’s approach is a strong belief that children are capable and competent learners. Her vision for the Koala Room is a calm, welcoming and homelike environment where children are trusted with real responsibility and given opportunities to build independence through meaningful everyday experiences.

Throughout the room you’ll find authentic, real-life resources alongside natural and open-ended materials. Real crockery and glassware, kitchen equipment, scales, homewares, jewellery and other everyday objects become meaningful resources for play, exploration and learning.

These resources aren’t simply there to look beautiful. Children are taught how to use them safely, care for them and return them respectfully. By trusting children with real things and genuine responsibility, they have opportunities to develop confidence, independence, respect and practical life skills.

This approach extends into everyday routines too. Children will be encouraged to take an active role in their day setting tables, serving their own food, caring for their belongings, cleaning up after themselves and taking responsibility for the environment they share with others.

Sustainability is also an important part of Michelle’s philosophy and has been carefully considered when creating the Koala Room. Wherever possible, resources are reusable, repurposed, preloved, natural or sourced from everyday life rather than continually purchasing new, purpose-made resources.

You’ll also notice very little is laminated. This is an intentional choice to reduce unnecessary plastic and explore more sustainable and authentic ways of presenting children’s learning within the environment.

Even the walls have a purpose.

Rather than filling wall spaces simply for decoration, they have intentionally been left relatively bare for now. Over time, they will become adorned with meaningful documentation photographs of the children engaging in real experiences, their words, ideas, questions and voices, and evidence of the learning actually taking place within their room.

The walls will gradually begin to tell the story of the children who belong within the space.

Everything within the Koala Room has been considered with purpose, while still leaving plenty of room for the children themselves to influence what it becomes.

And most importantly, it isn’t finished.

As the children explore their new environment, their interests, ideas, relationships and individual needs will continue to shape it. Experiences will change, resources will evolve and the environment will grow alongside the children.

The Koala Room is just one example of the different philosophies, strengths and approaches individual educators bring to Mayfield, and we love that our environments can reflect the educators and children who spend their days within them.

Here’s a little look at the beginning of the Koala Room’s next chapter.

This year’s Great Barrier Reef Festival was extra special as it celebrated 25 years, and we hope everyone had a fantastic weekend enjoying everything our community had to offer.

We were incredibly proud to have our sustainable reef sculptures on display, showcasing creativity and the importance of caring for our beautiful Great Barrier Reef as a Reef Guardian School.

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by to have a look!

🦷 We’re excited to welcome Delivering Dental to Mayfield on Tuesday 25th August!

Looking after little smiles is an important part of supporting children’s overall health and wellbeing, and we’re pleased to offer families the opportunity to access a free dental check right here at our centre.

Their mobile dental team provides children with the opportunity to have a dental check in the familiar surroundings of their early learning environment, helping to create a positive and relaxed experience while encouraging healthy oral habits from an early age.

If you’d like your child to participate, simply scan the QR code on the posters around the centre or click on the link below to complete the online consent form. ⬇️

We look forward to seeing the Delivering Dental team soon! 🪥

Another great day at Bush Kindy today! 🌿

We loved spending the morning out in nature exploring.

Today the children enjoyed water painting by the water while taking the time to observe what was happening around them. They had fun flying planes and frisbees, experimenting with how high and how far they could make them go, and worked together to collect rubbish from around the bushland. It was a great opportunity to talk about looking after our environment and protecting the animals that call it home.

We feel so lucky to be able to offer Bush Kindy and explore the beauty of nature near our centre. Watching them connect with nature, solve problems, work together and care for the world around them is something really special.

We’re proud to share some exciting news!

❤️💛🖤 💙💚🤍

Mayfield Early Education Cannonvale is thrilled to announce that our Narragunnawali Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) 2026–2027 has been officially published.

This marks our third consecutive published RAP, reflecting our ongoing commitment to embedding reconciliation into everyday practice and creating a culturally safe, respectful and inclusive environment for children, families and our community.

We are also incredibly proud to be the only early childhood education and care service in Airlie Beach with a published Reconciliation Action Plan. This achievement represents the dedication of our educators, the guidance of our community partners Yooribaya Cultural Experiences - Whitsundays, and our commitment to ensuring reconciliation is more than words it is something we actively live every day.

🐠 Our Reef has come to life! 🪸

As a proud Reef Guardian School, caring for our local marine environment is weaved in our learning at Mayfield.

Over June and July, each of our rooms took on a sustainability challenge developed by our sustainability officer, creating a 3D sculpture of their room animal using recycled and repurposed materials.

Our centre is divided into two unique learning environments our Rainforest and Reef sides with each room proudly carrying both an animal name and its Ngaro language name, kindly shared with us by Uncle Robert Yooribaya Cultural Experiences - Whitsundays.
Through this project, children explored sustainability, creativity, Aboriginal culture and language, and the incredible marine animals that make up sea country.

We’re excited to share that our Reef animal creations will be displayed as part of this weekend’s Great Barrier Reef Festival Art Exhibition, located at the front of Paradiso. They will accompany the many amazing 3d sculptures created for the amazing community event.

📸 If you’re heading to the Reef Festival this weekend, keep an eye out for our display!

🧡Share it in the comments or send it through to us, we’d love to see our Mayfield families enjoying the festival and supporting our children’s amazing creations!
