"He's just being careless."
If you've said this about your Year 3-4 child's Maths homework,
here's something worth knowing: research on student errors shows
most "careless mistakes" aren't carelessness at all — they're
specific, fixable skill gaps hiding behind a rushed answer.
Here are the 4 most common ones we see:
1️⃣ SHAKY TIMES TABLES
When multiplication facts aren't automatic, your child has to
"work them out" mid-problem — using up focus that should go
toward the actual question. This shows up as small errors
in bigger problems.
2️⃣ WEAK PLACE VALUE
Mixing up tens and units, or misreading a number like 402 as
"four hundred and twenty," isn't a silly slip — it's a gap in
understanding what each digit actually represents.
3️⃣ WORD-PROBLEM LANGUAGE
Words like "altogether," "difference," or "left" tell your
child WHICH operation to use. If they don't fully understand
the language, they can know the maths but still pick the wrong
operation.
4️⃣ NO CHECKING HABIT
Most children are never explicitly taught HOW to check an
answer — not just re-reading it, but re-solving it a different way.
The fix isn't "try harder" or "be more careful." It's identifying
which of these 4 is actually happening — then building that
specific skill.
