ACT Learners driving in NSW — which speed limit applies?
It’s that time of year, and one question we’re asked many times a day is about speed limits for ACT learners in NSW. Even though the law changed in 2013, there’s still much confusion, so here’s the clear rule:
ACT learner drivers may follow the posted NSW speed limit, because the ACT does not impose a specific learner speed cap. NSW Police enforce the licence conditions from the state or territory that issued your licence. So if your home licence has a learner speed restriction, you must follow it in NSW — but ACT learners can drive up to the posted limit (constantly adjusting for road and traffic conditions).
We’ve set out the full explanation with simple examples for learners and parents here: https://panachedrivertraining.blogspot.com/2025/12/act-learner-drivers-in-nsw-what-speed.html
Drive safely and enjoy the holiday season.

Many people misunderstand how to brake properly in modern cars. You’ll often read in manuals, training articles, and safety blogs that you should never swerve or slam on your brakes. But that advice is outdated—it's only valid if your car doesn’t have ABS. Back in the day, braking required skill and training to pulse your brakes correctly without fixating on the target or losing control. With the advent of ABS, braking has become much simpler. When you activate ABS—by pressing the brake firmly and holding it down—you can look where you want to go, not at what you’re about to hit, and steer around obstacles confidently. In fact, the key is to focus on steering and maintaining a steady course, because ABS helps your car avoid locking up and keeps you safe. Understanding how ABS works can transform your driving safety and confidence.
Did you know that understanding your vehicle's Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) can significantly improve your safety on the road? This innovative technology enhances your control during emergency stops, and it's essential for every driver to be aware of its benefits and limitations. Remember, ABS is only activated when you push the brake pedal firmly down to the floor and hold it there. It is the holiday season again, and we are asked at least once a day,
"Can our A.C.T. learner drive faster than 90km/h in N.S.W where the limit exceeds 90km/h?"
The answer is YES!
When NSW changed the speed limit for learners from 80km/h to 90km/h in 2013, the Law reverted to the previous legislative approach of applying speed limits on learner drivers as a licensing condition rather than a Road Rule. You must not drive/ride faster than the learner speed limit imposed by your issuing State or Territory and must observe the posted speed limit in NSW, below the limit imposed by your licensing State.
The A.C.T. has NO learner speed limit restrictions.
Please enjoy your holidays, plan your trip, and always keep a minimum 3-second gap between you and the car in front!
Rest, Revive, Suvive.

Have you ever considered the stark contrast between the amount of time and money we invest in learning to play musical instruments or sports versus learning to drive? It's pretty startling when you think about it. Even though countless lives are lost due to road crashes, we still seem to neglect the importance of proper driver education. It's time to shift our priorities and invest in the skills that truly matter for our safety and well-being.
You can pay over $120.00 an hour for piano lessons. Most people who are considering piano lessons don't think I will have one or two lessons with a professional and be a fantastic pianist for the rest of my life.
This is something to ponder on.

If you're planning to tow a trailer, caravan, or boat during the holidays, it's important to take the necessary precautions to ensure your safety as well as the safety of others on the road. To be proactive, you can start by checking your tow bar and trailer lights to ensure they're in good working condition. It's also important to ensure that your vehicle is not overloaded and that the weight is properly distributed, as this can greatly impact your trip's outcome. Furthermore, it's crucial to thoroughly inspect your tires, brakes, steering, and suspension to ensure optimal performance. Knowing your trailer's braking system and taking regular breaks on your journey can also significantly affect your safety while on the road. If you require assistance with these measures, it's advisable to seek help from a professional. By taking these constructive steps, you can have peace of mind and enjoy a successful holiday towing experience.

It's important to look beyond the common belief that speed is the only cause of collisions on the road. Factors such as driver distraction, driver fatigue, vehicle maintenance, and road conditions also play a crucial role. In addition, standardized driver education is essential to ensure safe driving practices. One effective way to achieve this is to introduce driving simulator lessons in primary schools and on-road training for teenagers. Regular re-assessment of driving skills should also be conducted, and drivers should be encouraged to retire from driving at an appropriate age or if they are no longer fit to drive.
