It was a pleasure for Gabby Millgate to present today's seminar at the Australian National University (ANU) Public Awareness of Science Department on the important topic of "Climate Adaptation Capability Begins in the Early Years."

A heartfelt thank you to all the ANU students and academics who joined us for this engaging and thought-provoking seminar. It was wonderful to share ideas, discuss the vital role of early childhood education in building climate resilience, and explore how we can empower the next generation to become informed and capable environmental stewards.

💙 Our 2026 Winter Woollies Appeal Has Come to an End! 💙

A huge THANK YOU to all of our wonderful WVELC families who supported this year's Winter Woollies Appeal Ronald McDonald House ACT & South East NSW .

Thanks to your generosity, we have collected an incredible amount of pantry items and donations to help support families staying in the Special Care Nursery and Paediatric Wards at The Canberra Hospital during what can be some of the most challenging times in their lives.

Every donation, big or small, will make a meaningful difference, and we are so grateful to everyone who contributed to this amazing cause.

A very special thank you to The Cleaning Warehouse for their incredibly generous donation and support of our appeal. Your kindness has helped make this year's fundraiser even more successful.

Important Information About Car Park and Safety Improvements 🚗🚗

WVELC, in collaboration with Canberra Health Services (CHS), will be implementing important safety improvements in our car park, commencing during the week of 27 July 2026.

Electronic bollards will be installed to prevent unauthorised access and improve the safety of children, families, staff and visitors accessing our service.

To avoid damage to your vehicle or the possibility of it being towed, please:
• Do not park or attempt to squeeze your vehicle into unauthorised areas.
• Do not leave your vehicle in the car park overnight.
• Do not park between the bollards.
• Do not block entrances, exits, curved areas or red-painted zones.
• Do not attempt to drive over or force the bollards down, as this may cause significant damage to your vehicle.
• Do not damage or interfere with the bollards or surrounding infrastructure.

Please be aware that scheduled work may proceed even when vehicles are present.

The WVELC car park is a 15-minute drop-off and pick-up zone for families with young children and authorised visitors. Anyone visiting WVELC outside of regular drop-off and collection arrangements must contact the office before their visit to organise appropriate access.

The two designated spaces at the end of the car park are reserved for emergency vehicles and deliveries. Please do not park in these spaces, as unauthorised vehicles may be towed. Permit must be displayed.

These measures are being introduced to provide children and families with a safer and more peaceful environment when arriving at and leaving their early learning service.

🌷 Working Bee Preparation in Full Swing! 🌷

All children across the service have worked tirelessly to prepare our bulbs for planting during our Working Bee!

From sorting and counting, to exploring, wondering and helping with such care, the children have been deeply involved in this beautiful seasonal project. It has been a wonderful opportunity to connect with nature, learn about growth and change, and contribute to something meaningful for our whole WVELC community.

We can’t wait to see these bulbs planted and watch them bloom in spring — a little reminder of the hard work, curiosity and care shared by our children. 🌱💛

At Woden Valley ELC, our goal is not just to “tick the box”, but to keep striving every day to minimise waste, make thoughtful choices and support children to understand their role in caring for the environment.

Did you know?

Early childhood services can produce a significant amount of waste each day, from nappies and wipes to food scraps, packaging, paper and art materials.

Food waste alone can make up around 30% of the average waste bin in a childcare or preschool setting, while paper, cardboard and plastic can take up another 25%.

Disposable nappies are also a major contributor to landfill, with one baby estimated to create hundreds of kilograms of nappy waste each year.

This is why small, everyday choices matter.

At Woden Valley ELC, we continue to reflect on how we can reduce waste through mindful meal practices, recycling, composting, reusing resources, reducing unnecessary packaging, and teaching children that sustainability is part of daily life.

Every small step helps create lifelong habits. 🌱
