New AI-powered alert system to warn drivers of approaching wildlife An estimated 10 million animals are killed on Australian roads each year. It's hoped a new artificial intelligence-powered alert system being trialled on the Monaro Highway near Canberra will reduce the toll.

This is a commonsense change from the NSW Government that puts an end to one of the biggest frustrations for motorists, particularly across regional NSW, who have been stuck crawling through empty work zones on 100 km/h roads.

Reduced speed limits will still apply whenever workers are on site or conditions require them. But where it's safe to do so, roadwork speed limit signs MUST be removed outside construction hours.

We are installing 1.2 km of virtual fencing on Macs Reef Road between Bungendore Road and Denley Drive as part of a 12-month trial to assess the effectiveness of virtual fencing at reducing the number of vehicle collisions with animals.

Virtual fencing devices are activated by approaching vehicle headlights and emit a combination of sound and flashing blue and yellow LED lights to alert nearby animals, reducing the likelihood of animals being startled onto the road.

The fencing is expected to be installed on Wednesday 24 June and will be installed between 10am-2pm to avoid peak traffic. The works area will be under a temporary speed reduction of 40km/h. Installation may continue on Thursday 25 June if not completed on Wednesday.

🚨 Reminder: double demerit points will be in effect over the Easter long weekend, from 12:00am Thursday 2 April until 11:59pm Monday 6 April.
