What can a lump of clay teach you about history?
Quite a lot, as our Year 11 and 12 Ancient History students discovered this week.
Students recreated Bronze Age clay tablets using Linear A and Linear B script, quickly learning that being an ancient scribe required precision, patience and persistence. They had to seek challenge throughout the delicate process and remain determined when their tablets threatened to crumble.
The activity also prompted students to reflect on learning, exploring why so little written evidence survives from this period and how historians continue to unlock the mysteries of the ancient world.
A memorable lesson that transformed history from something students read about into something they experienced.

From first turns to confident runs, our Outdoor Recreation students embraced every challenge during an unforgettable three-day snow adventure at Perisher.
Skiing and snowboarding across Blue Cow and Perisher Valley, students experienced everything the mountains could throw at them. Icy conditions tested their determination on day one, freezing temperatures followed on day two, and they were rewarded with a spectacular bluebird day to finish. Fresh snowfall over the final two days created fantastic conditions for learning and confidence building.
The progress was incredible. By the end of the trip, many snowboarders were confidently riding on their toe edge, while several skiers were linking smooth parallel turns down the slopes.
Just as impressive was the way our students represented Erindale College. They worked with others, remained determined through difficult conditions, developed their independence by managing their own equipment and embraced every opportunity to seek challenge. Their positive attitude and support for one another made us incredibly proud.
The biggest sign of success? Before the bus had even left the mountain, many were already planning their next trip. It looks like the snow bug has well and truly arrived!

Our Timber Products students are making a real difference in the community.
Recently, student teams proudly delivered handcrafted mud kitchens to two local early learning centres, Communities at Work Appletree House Child Care and Education Centre and Communities at Work Illoura Child Care and Education Centre.
Working together from design through to construction, students demonstrated outstanding leadership, teamwork and craftsmanship. Throughout the project they embodied the Erindale College Learner Profile, especially Work with Others, Seek Challenge and Be Open-minded, while developing practical skills that create a lasting impact beyond the classroom.
The appreciation from both centres was a wonderful reminder that learning at Erindale College extends well beyond the workshop.
This exciting project will run again this semester. If you work with, or know of a community organisation such as a day care centre, preschool or primary school that would benefit from receiving a donated mud kitchen, please contact Tim Parker at [email protected].
