Cat was overjoyed to show & tell some native seeds & resources as part of our ‘Intro to Seed Saving’ workshop at Canberra Environment Centre 💚
Cat focused on plants from the Myrtacea & Proteacea plant families and ways of using heat to open their seedpods to release their delicate seeds! 🫘
She passed around a selection of hakea seed pods - big chuuuuunky boys! 💪- that with heat, split apart to reveal 2 symmetrical grooves, each housing one papery black seed.
Using a beautiful pink callistemon 💖 from the Environment Centre carpark to demonstrate the stages of seed development, she also touched on propagation and seed scarification techniques.
Then there was excited group discussion with many sharing interesting tid bits from their own experience with native plants. We are super pumped to host more native seed meetups & events in spring!

Rad, Michelle and Cat had a great time with everyone at the weekends ‘Intro to Seed Saving’ workshop held at the lovely Canberra Environment Centre. Rad did a great demo of the fermenting method of seed saving, then everyone got up and had a go, chopping up different veg and shaking their seeds in jars of water. This method is for seeds from juicy fruits that have a gel coating that inhibits germination, and benefits from us recreating digestion by animals.
Then we all had to go at winnowing method, stomping on paper bags full of brassica and lettuce seed pods. It was a seed explosion! Then Cat gave an intro to native seed collecting with lots of great discussion. Michelle made great contributions throughout the day, what a great team of facilitators! They were matched by the lovely group of eager participants from many backgrounds - from total newbies to people with market gardens, bush blocks or balcony planters, all keen to learn the magic of seed saving!

Hey hey!
So we're testing your seed ID skills (not deliberately) by accidentally packing some sweet peas seeds in snow peas packets.
Sweet peas are a flower and NOT EDIBLE! Their seeds are round and a dark brown or black. About the size of a pin head.
Snow peas seeds are the size of peas and a light brown colour. They could also be wrinkly.
So! If you have recently bought a packet of snow peas seeds from us , take a clear pic and send it to us, telling us which one you think it is!
If you do indeed have sweet peas instead of snow peas, we can also arrange to get the snow peas to you!
