DPA were honoured to host Her Excellency Fiame Naomi Mataʻafa, former Prime Minister of Samoa for the keynote address at the State of the Pacific Conference 2026.
Her eloquent reflections on belonging, mobility, education, universities and Pacific futures resonated deeply across the conference. We were also proud to mark the launch of the Oceanic Diplomacy collection to which Afioga Fiame is a contributor — a powerful expression of Pacific leadership, knowledge and connection.

The Pacific Research Colloquium (PRC) has officially opened this week at the National University of Samoa — the first time the program has been organised in partnership with a Pacific tertiary institution.
Co-delivered by the National University of Samoa (NUS) and the ANU Department of Pacific Affairs (DPA), and funded by DFAT, the two-week programme brings together emerging researchers from across the region for intensive training in social science research, analysis, and evidence-based policymaking.
In her opening address, NUS Vice Chancellor Professor Tuifuisa'a Patila Amosa welcomed participants, while the Assistant Australian High Commissioner highlighted that “we hope that the PRC supports your efforts in developing economic and research methods and a wide variety of analytical tools tailored to research in and about the Pacific.”
Since 2007, the PRC has strengthened research skills, fostered regional collaboration, and built a powerful alumni network tackling some of the Pacific’s most pressing challenges — from climate change to ocean sustainability to gender-based violence.
DPA and NUS is proud to support this important platform for building Pacific research capacity and advancing the region’s next generation of scholars. 🌺
