WHO ARE YOU… WHEN LOVE DEMANDS A CHOICE?

A razor-sharp modern classic about identity, desire and the cruelties of indecision.

Mike Bartlett’s C*ck has, in just over a decade, secured its place as a seminal modern classic — strong, startling, and unforgettable, it’s a play that confronts identity, desire and the cruelties of choice with wit, tension and emotional clarity.

When John, long in a relationship with his boyfriend, meets a woman who captivates him, everything fractures. His decision — or indecision — spirals outward, dragging in friends, rivals, lovers, and expectations, until a final dinner becomes a battleground for truth. With blistering dialogue and brutal honesty, C*ck forces us to ask: can anyone really choose? What happens when identity is fluid, but allegiances demand definition?

“Bartlett’s sharp, witty study is less about tortured bisexuality than the paralyzing indecision that stems from not knowing who one really is.” — The Guardian (Michael Billington)

BULL by Mike Bartlett

WELCOME TO THE RING. ONLY ONE SURVIVES.

A lean, brutal modern classic — a companion piece to C*ck, turning the workplace into a gladiatorial arena.

Written by the same bold voice, Bull stands today as a seminal modern classic of contemporary drama — compact, merciless, and etched with brutal clarity. Bartlett himself originally conceived it in conversation with C*ck — they share casting shape, thematic symmetry and a merciless aesthetic. It’s also very funny.

Set in any grey-lit office, three colleagues await a meeting with their boss — one of them will be culled. From the start, the cruelty is ritualised: whispers, insinuations, triangulation, humiliation. The tension tightens until the final moments feel less like resolution and more like exposure.

“Fast-paced, fanged and darkly funny … BULL charges and makes impact.” — New York Daily News

Lots happening in Mockingbird land!

After the outrageous success of Vanya & Sonia & Masha & Spike (what are we going to do with those Snow White and dwarf costumes?!?), our ubiquitous leader is taking a much needed break and is handing over the directing reins of our next two productions, C*CK and BULL, to Zac Bridgman (The Drawer Boy, Almost Maine) and Céline Oudin (Snatches, No Exit) respectively. Chris will still be helping as he hands over his concepts to these two excellent directors.

We are thrilled to announce the talented and fearless cast for C*CK:

Eli Narev
James Phillips
Adelaide Hayes
&
Paul Hutchinson

The cast for BULL will be announced soon!

Some eagle-eyed readers may have noticed that the dates have changed for C*CK. We’ve brought it closer to BULL as they are companion pieces and it feels appropriate to have them near each other. We’ve also created a ticket deal where instead of paying $40 per show, you can book both for $70. Details via the QR codes on the poster or www.belcoarts.com.au. The $33 ticket at the door for those aged 33 and under still stands.

Our production of THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN is fast approaching and seems to be the most anticipated show of the season. Audition details will be announced very soon so stay tuned!

The “Three Sisters” having a moment after the final performance of “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike”. All three admitted to getting emotional at the end of the last performance, knowing that this was indeed a special production. With many capacity crowds including the sold out matinee, and rapturous responses from our beautiful audiences, this was another Mockingbird production to be very proud of. Congrats to Steph, Gab, the ridiculously talented cast and our crew on bringing this Canberra premiere to glorious life! Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike And Cassandra and Nina with live in our hearts and minds for a very long time.

Our favourite Shakespeare quote is from Measure for Measure. Mockingbird wouldn’t exist and continue to exist if doubt had won.
