As the Pacific cyclone season comes to an end, recent events in Papua New Guinea and New Zealand are highlighting a shift in cyclone risk.
According to UNSW Canberra researcher Dr Difei Deng, this season shows growing concern around rainfall, flooding and post‑landfall impacts - not just wind damage - particularly in regions that don’t usually consider themselves cyclone‑prone.
These insights underscore the importance of adapting disaster planning to evolving climate risks.
