Steps have been taken in the last 20 years to increase the presence of women on the boards of Australia’s top 200 companies.
While a positive shift, there exists an uncomfortable truth that representation doesn’t always translate to greater decision-making influence by women.
Professor Tracy Wang, a corporate governance researcher at ANU, cautions that policies focused solely on increasing representation may not be enough to ensure women drive meaningful change.
“Reforms that are often backed by quotas, penalties or other mandatory obligations are effective at increasing representation numerically but less so at translating representation into genuine influence,” she explains.
To improve gender equality outcomes, Tracy’s research shows board reforms must move beyond checkbox exercises and put women in positions where they feel empowered.

“May the Force be with you, always.”
An iconic pop culture reference, this line acquires additional significance for the students of Associate Lecturer Paul Ngo.
Inserted at the end of their exam papers, he uses it to applaud and encourage his students as they conclude a particularly stressful time of semester.
It’s a full circle moment for Paul who commenced his own ANU studies as an international student in 2012, having moved to Australia from Vietnam in 2008. Today, he is helping to shape the next generation of students at the university where his own ANU journey began.
“I come at teaching as someone who has walked the path before,” he says.
Paul is determined to create a learning space that is accepting, connected and fulfilling.
