Good counsellors remain teachable.

Counsellors are invited into complex stories, often shaped by experiences, cultures and perspectives different from their own. No single person sees every situation clearly, which makes humility an essential part of safe and effective counselling practice.

For Christian counsellors, teachability means allowing Scripture to challenge our assumptions, listening carefully to others and welcoming supervision, feedback and ongoing learning.

The gospel gives us a secure foundation for this humility. Knowing we are fully known and deeply loved by God enables us to acknowledge our limitations, examine our biases and receive correction without defensiveness.

Christian counselling requires knowledge and skill. It also requires the humility to keep listening, reflecting and growing.

Wisdom is developed through experience.

Knowledge matters, but becoming a wise counsellor requires more than learning theories and techniques. It grows through practice, honest reflection, thoughtful questions and a willingness to learn from real human experiences.

This is especially important in Christian counselling. Biblical truth is not simply information to be understood; it must shape how we listen, respond and care for others. Jesus often used stories and questions to help people reflect, recognise what was happening within them and grow in wisdom.

Effective Christian counselling training therefore brings together biblical foundations, professional knowledge, practical skills and reflective practice. It prepares counsellors to apply what they know with wisdom, compassion and integrity.
