Looking to make an impact behind the scenes while helping shape the future of AMSA? 🌟

The Commonwealth Prac Payment has now been expanded to cover nine allied health degrees. While this is a welcome step towards supporting students on placement, medical students remain excluded.

Medical students complete some of the highest number of mandatory placement hours of any degree, often relocating, reducing paid work, and facing significant out-of-pocket costs just to meet course requirements.

For students from low-income, rural, and regional backgrounds, these financial pressures can be the difference between staying in medicine and leaving their degree. No student should have to choose between completing their placements and paying their bills.

AMSA policy applications are open! 📣

AMSA is looking for medical students to join our final policy writing cycle of the year.

AMSA policy is one of the main ways medical students help shape national advocacy. Policies are written by medical students, voted on by medical students, and then used by AMSA in submissions, campaigns, meetings with decision-makers, and advocacy to governments, medical schools, health services and peak bodies.

This is not just a writing opportunity. Policy gives AMSA the evidence, direction and student mandate to push for real change. This year, AMSA’s policies on placement poverty have strengthened our push for medical students to be included in the Commonwealth Prac Payment. That policy-backed advocacy helped form the basis for the David Pocock and Helen Haines petition to end placement poverty, which was tabled in Parliament with 43,000 signatures and showed the scale of national support for action. 🩺

Council 3 policy topics include:

🍊 Antimicrobial Resistance
🍊 Student Safety and Professional Conduct in Medical Education
🍊 Pharmaceutical Financing and Relationship with Industry
🍊 Organ and Tissue Donation
🍊 Vocational Training Pathways

No previous policy writing experience is needed. You will work with other medical students and policy mentors to research the issue, consult with students and stakeholders, write the policy, and present it at AMSA Council. ✍️

This is a chance to shape national advocacy, turn student voices into action, and contribute to campaigns and wins that affect medical students across Australia.

Applications close Friday 17 July at 11:59pm AEST. ⏰
