📢 AHPRA ADVOCACY UPDATE: REGISTRATION FEE DEFERRAL
AHPRA and the Medical Board of Australia have announced a new pilot allowing eligible graduating medical students to defer payment of their registration fee.
This follows ongoing advocacy from medical student organisations, including NSWMSC, AMSA, MSCV, NSWMSX and QLDMSC, highlighting the significant upfront cost of provisional registration for students transitioning into internship.
We’re pleased to see this advocacy translate into a practical change for graduating students. 🩺
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW 👇
📅 Pilot opens: 9 October 2026
👩⚕️ Who is eligible?
Eligible Australian and New Zealand medical graduates applying for provisional registration for the first time.
💳 What is deferred?
You will still need to pay the application fee upfront, but your registration fee can be deferred until 31 March 2027.
📆 Pilot period:
Applications made between 9 October 2026 and 4 January 2027.
⚠️ IMPORTANT: DO NOT START YOUR PROVISIONAL REGISTRATION APPLICATION BEFORE 9 OCTOBER ⚠️
If you want to use the deferral option:
1️⃣ The fee deferral request must be completed first.
2️⃣ You then begin your provisional registration application.
3️⃣ The deferral cannot be applied retrospectively. If you start your application before 9 October, you will not be eligible for the pilot.
AHPRA will release further instructions on how to request the deferral closer to 9 October.
