Black Mountain School The school's curriculum is underpinned by the goals of capacity-building for independence, maximum participation, and quality of life.

INTRODUCTION TO SCHOOL
Black Mountain School is a secondary specialist school providing innovative and engaging learning programs for students with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities. Students are catered for throughout the school with specialised programs in communication, sensory development, functional literacy and numeracy, and personal and social development. The curriculum seeks to enable our students by providing a framework that teaches functional skills that is consistent with evidence-based curriculum practice and reflects high expectations and enhances support for teachers and parents, and promotes evidence-based pedagogy. The school has a particular focus on successful transitions to post-school life. Work education programs are offered both within the school and in external work environments including horticulture, hydroponics, recycling, silk shop, office and clerical, and hospitality and canteen. The school's excellent range of facilities including a hydrotherapy pool, 'Liberty Swing', sensory garden, upgraded home science area, horticulture training centre, sustainability centre and extended gym support the curriculum. Neighbouring high schools complete peer support, peer leadership, and community service programs at the schools, building the social and spiritual capital of the school. ‼️ REMINDER: ‼️ Minimal supervision arrangements for ACT public schools and preschools,
9am-11am, Thursday 17 September

A reminder that all ACT public schools will be operating under minimal supervision arrangements from 9am to 11am on Thursday 17 September 2026.

Families may wish to keep their children at home during that time. Schools are not closed and supervision will be available for those that require it.

Supported School Transport will not change on this day. If you use this transportation for your child to get to school, they may access the service as normal and supervision will be provided.

Schools will resume regular operations at 11am.

This is to support Australian Education Union members to attend a paid time meeting to consider the ACT Government’s pay and conditions offer.

Absence notifications: for families that keep their child home – you will still receive an absence notification from your school for the 2-hour period. You only need to respond to the notification if it is incorrect.

Regular teaching and learning will begin at 11am.

The arrangement is to support Australian Education Union members to attend a paid time meeting to consider the ACT Government’s September 10 pay and conditions offer for teachers, school leaders and school psychologists.

Black Mountain School is really excited about a new collaborative project that is starting this term to support our students' work ready capabilities. Partnering with Capital Linen Service, Black Mountain School has developed a space on school grounds to cut linen (towels, sheets, towels) and repurpose them into rags to then be sold onto local industries. Cutting tables, baskets, scales are now installed and students will be trained on site to safely cut and weigh linen rags. 50% of all proceeds (supported by Capital Linen) will return to Black Mountain School to support student work experience programs.

If you are interested in your young person being involved in this project, please reach out to the school for further information. Speak with your young person's teacher at the upcoming Review Meeting as part of their Future Planning discussions.

Jeremy and Fiona are representing Black Mountain School at the annual Step into the
Limelight exhibition at the M16 art gallery in Griffith. Students from public schools across
Canberra participate in this wonderful showcase of their broad and varied Visual Art skills.
The exhibition will run from Friday 12 - Sunday 28 June with M16 opening hours
Monday - Friday, 10-5pm. Gallery: Wednesday - Sunday, 12pm-5pm

Thank you to our wonderful community for your support in keeping your children at home today whilst many of our staff undertook industrial action. 🙏🙏🙏 Mountaineers marched from the school to the larger community march, to stand alongside many other teachers and LSAs in their advocacy for better working conditions and resources to better support our staff and students 🌟 ♥️🌟♥️

📢 REMINDER - All ACT public schools CLOSED this Friday 22 May 2026, 8.30am – 10.30am 📢

In order to enable industrial action and keep students safe all ACT public schools, including specialist schools and preschools, will be CLOSED this Friday from 8.30am to 10.30am.

The Education Directorate has decided to close schools to students during this time, in the interest of student and staff safety.

The Australian Education Union has notified the Education Directorate that its members will take part in protected industrial action from 8.30am to 10.30am this Friday. We expect a majority of ACT public school staff will participate in the work stoppage, meaning we are unable to confidently plan for safe and appropriate supervision for all students.

Be aware there will be no onsite supervision available for students during this time. The school day will begin at 10.30am.

Your school will be in contact about any changes to timetabling or start of day activities. If you have any questions or concerns about how this closure will impact your school, please contact your school directly.

We acknowledge that school closures have significant impacts on families and these decisions are not taken lightly. We are letting families know about this change as early as possible to help with forward planning. The safety and wellbeing of our students and staff remains our highest priority.
