Situated in the heart of the nation’s capital, and on the campus of Australia’s foremost research university, the Australian National University School of Music has a proud and rich history. For nearly 50 years the School has played a leading role in the cultural life of Canberra and our region. Beyond the stereotype: the mandolin in 18th-century Naples

The mandolin is synonymous with Neapolitan music. But its story is far richer than the familiar folkloric image.

Join Anna Rita Addessi and Lawrence Mays for a lecture-recital exploring the instrument’s fascinating journey through 18th-century Naples and across Europe.

And this isn’t just a talk. 🎶 The event includes a performance of Emanuele Barbella’s Sonata a due Mandolini, Gimo 13, on replicas of historic instruments.

Join us for 'Redefined and streamlined': SSL SiX and masstige music production technologies, presented by Dr Pat O'Grady, Senior Lecturer at the ANU School of Music.

This seminar explores the resurgence of hardware in music production, examining the SSL SiX desktop mixer as an example of 'masstige': where prestige studio brands create affordable hardware for mainstream markets, redefining the cultural status of home production tools.

Join us on Tuesday 11 August, 1–2pm for a relaxed Staff Lunchtime Concert with pianist Edward Neeman, featuring Frederick Septimus Kelly’s Sonata in F minor alongside works by Schumann, Brahms, and Elisabeth von Herzogenberg.

Then on Wednesday 26 August, 6–7pm, experience a rare pairing of period and modern instruments as Zoltán Szabo and Nicholas Kennedy, Sydney Conservatorium of Music, The University of Sydney faculty, perform Beethoven and Rachmaninoff using instruments from the ANU Historical Keyboard Collection, including gut‑string cello, replica 1819 Graf fortepiano, and the School’s 1911 Blüthner.

🎶 Meet the talented artists taking part in the Recording First Nations program at the Australian National University Community Music Centre.

Over June and July, singer-songwriters Lillian Fromyhr and Molly Jae will develop their recording, mixing and mastering skills through hands-on studio training, mentorship and creative collaboration.

Supported by artsACT, the program aims to empower First Nations artists with industry knowledge they can take back and share within their communities.

Working in the School of Music's studios and facilities including Yil Lull Studio, participants will gain valuable production experience while creating original recordings of their own music.

We can't wait to hear what they create. 🎤✨

This Thursday, the ANU School of Music presents a lunchtime concert featuring staff from the Jazz and Contemporary area.

Featuring Tammy Aslett (vocals), Miro Bukovsky (trumpet), Con Campbell (tenor saxophone), Leisa Keen (vocals/piano), James Luke (bass), Nick McBride (drums), Kristin McGee (alto saxophone), Sophie Min (piano), and Greg Stott (guitar). This concert brings together leading performers and educators for an engaging program of jazz and contemporary music.
