On Tuesday, our Kindergarten students celebrated 100 days of school! To mark this special milestone, our teachers and students dressed up as 100-year-olds and had a wonderful day celebrating how much they’ve learned and grown!

Here come the grannies 2026

In Year 1, students explored all the long vowel sounds and learned that different graphemes can represent the same phoneme. They also learned about the three different sounds that /ed/ can make at the end of words. Moreover, they had the opportunity to learn about inflectional endings. They have been focusing on writing recounts of stories read in class and demonstrating their understanding of these stories through different types of questions and connections.
In Mathematics, they began learning about addition to 20 using a range of strategies. They explored counting on and friends of ten through concrete, representational and abstract stages to reinforce their understanding of these concepts.

This term, the 3P students have been busy exploring the world of three dimensional geometry through creative, hands on learning experiences.

They began by transforming flat 2D paper nets into familiar 3D objects, helping them understand how 3D shapes are constructed. 3P students then took on the role of architectural engineers, using paddle pop sticks and modelling clay to build a variety of 3D models. This engaging task provided a practical understanding of vertices and edges while encouraging teamwork and problem solving.

Watching students collaborate, think critically, and bring abstract mathematical concepts to life by creating real, tangible shapes has been a highlight of the week.

Quiet Mornings at the Mint

On the first Saturday of each month from 9am–10am, the Royal Australian Mint opens early for Quiet Mornings — a dedicated low-sensory session designed for people who may have heightened sensory requirements. The next session will take place this Saturday 4 July. Visitors can explore the exhibition space with reduced noise and smaller crowds, in a calm and welcoming environment. Sessions are free, but numbers are limited and bookings are essential. Learn more and reserve tickets here.

What a term, 5M!
In English, the students have enjoyed following the lives of Stanley Yelnats and his crew at Camp Green Lake in the class novel, Holes. They have been able to track their understandings of the text, through completing their PEEL pieces.
In HASS, students were able to share their understandings of democracy and in Science, build their knowledge around the elements of weathering, erosion and deposition in relation to the Earth’s surface.
As well, the students gained much insight about the importance of country to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through taking part in an assembly for Reconciliation Week where they shared their reconciliation wreaths.
Well done 5M on a big first semester of learning and for being a part of my first semester at Mawson PS too.

This week, 3MIP have been exploring celebrations as part of their HASS unit. Students worked in pairs to research a celebration of their choice, gathering information about its origins, traditions, and cultural significance.
They then used their digital skills to create animated slideshows, experimenting with transitions, movement, and layout to present their findings clearly and creatively.
To finish, each pair delivered a class presentation, sharing what they learned and teaching their classmates about celebrations from around the world. It was wonderful to see their confidence, teamwork, and growing research skills shine.

In SGP 2, students have been learning subtraction through the use of a variety of hands-on manipulatives and concrete materials. It allows students to physically represent and explore subtraction concepts. By engaging with these materials, students are able to develop a deeper understanding of subtraction as the process of taking away, finding the difference and comparing quantities.

Students explored the properties of soils by investigating different soil samples and recording their observations through labelled drawings.

In maths, students learnt about fractions and explored the properties of 3D shapes through a range of hands-on learning tasks.

In Mandarin writing, students developed and “bumped up” their narratives by progressing from a sketch plan to a first draft and finally to a published piece through teacher conferencing.

Our 6MIP space scientists have blasted off into their latest mission - exploring every planet in our solar system! After diving into their research, students teamed up to shrink the enormous distances between each planet and the Sun so they could map out a whole mini solar system right on our community oval!
