Why does handwriting still matter?
In a digital world, handwriting continues to support memory, concentration, creativity, fine motor development, and confidence.
At Canberra Montessori School, children are prepared for writing through meaningful hands-on experiences that connect the hand and the mind.
Technology is important, but so is the lifelong skill of putting pencil to paper.
What are your thoughts on handwriting in today’s world?

Here at CMS, we offer an authentic Montessori experience to every child.
Canberra Montessori School is an independent school proudly offering an education founded on the Montessori philosophy and principles, for children aged 18 months to Year 6. Over 100 years ago, Maria Montessori encouraged educators to “follow the child” and in doing so she left us with not only a system of education but a way of life. We believe that when children are placed in a prepared environm

💛 Last year, the CMS community achieved something incredible.
Together, we raised over $5,000 for Children’s Ground and became one of the top five primary school fundraisers in Australia for Wear It Yellow Day.
This year, we would love to do it again.
On Friday 29 May, CMS students and staff will be taking part in Wear It Yellow Day as part of National Reconciliation Week 2026.
Children’s Ground is a First Nations established and led organisation creating lasting change through education, health, employment and cultural strength for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and communities.
This year’s National Reconciliation Week theme, “All In”, reminds us that reconciliation is something we all contribute to through our actions, conversations and community.
Students will participate in National Reconciliation Week learning experiences throughout the day, and we invite our community to wear yellow and donate what they can 💛

Last week, CMS families joined us for our Term 2 Montessori Learning Walk, one of the parent education opportunities we offer throughout the year to deepen understanding of Montessori education in practice. 🌍✨
This term’s focus was Geography and Cosmic Education, with families moving through Cycle 1, Cycle 2 and Cycle 3 to experience how learning progresses across the Montessori journey.
Beginning in Cycle 1 with the Continent Globe and Puzzle Map of the World, families explored how children first develop a concrete understanding of the Earth and its continents.
In Cycle 2, presentations demonstrated how children build on these foundations through explorations of the Earth’s rotation around the sun, night and day, seasons, and time zones.
In Cycle 3, families experienced how this learning expands further into studies of climate zones, air and ocean currents, and the interconnected relationships between people, plants, animals, and environments across the globe.
One of the most powerful aspects of Montessori education is the way learning builds progressively from simple to complex over time, with each cycle laying the foundations for the next.
Thank you to our educators for the care, preparation, and knowledge they shared throughout the evening, and to the families who joined us for this shared learning experience.

What began as a single classroom in Italy has grown into a global educational movement spanning more than 100 countries.
Nearly 120 years ago, Maria Montessori opened the first Montessori classroom with a vision for education built on respect, independence, curiosity, and a deep understanding of the child. More than a century later, Montessori education continues to grow worldwide as families seek learning environments that nurture confidence, capability, creativity, and a genuine love of learning.
While the world has changed dramatically, the core principles of Montessori education remain just as relevant today. Many of the hands-on Montessori materials designed by Maria Montessori herself are still used in classrooms around the world, supporting children through exploration, independence, and discovery.
At Canberra Montessori School, we are proud to continue this legacy each day. To see Montessori in action and learn more about our community:

At Canberra Montessori School, mathematics is explored through hands-on materials, collaboration, and discovery. 🌿
These Cycle 2 students were recently working together with the Montessori racks and tubes division material, using concrete experiences to deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts.
In Montessori classrooms, children are given the time and space to think independently, learn from one another, and build confidence through meaningful learning experiences.
Moments like these remind us that learning does not need to be rushed to be powerful.
We are currently welcoming enrolment enquiries for 2027 from Cycle 1 to Cycle 3.

Transitions are an important part of the Montessori journey, for both children and families.
One of the questions we are most often asked is how Child Care Subsidy (CCS) works as children transition from long day care into Cycle 1 at Canberra Montessori School.
We’ve put together a simple overview to help families better understand how CCS, Early Extended Day (EED), and ACT Preschool Funding may apply within our Montessori programs.
