You know it's a rather special occasion when it makes it on to a postcard ... like this gem from 28 August, 1923.
It's a photograph of the Minister for Works and Railways, Percy G Stewart, turning the first sod at Parliament House, Canberra.
A Mr Harold Strachan wrote on the postcard to Karen Emerton: "I was driving the Traction Engine and a Mr Joe Lea was driving the steam shovel which turned the sod."

1951 was a big year for the Shepherd family of Lockyer Street, Griffith, winners of the Jubilee Garden Competition. They took out the coveted title of "Winner of the Open Section Without Help".
The garden competition was part of the Jubilee of Federation celebrations.

In 1962, Tuggeranong Station was a thriving sheep property located on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River. At its peak, up to 50,000 sheep were shorn annually.
The land was resumed by the Government in 1974 to create the satellite suburb of Tuggeranong.

Rogers on East Row at Civic was the place to shop, according to this 1962 photo, where you could buy anything from shoes to records.
It was also famous for installing Canberra's first escalator, but apparently it only had the one - if you wanted to go down you had to use the stairs.
