This week, our Netball, Basketball and Football communities are marking the end of the winter season with their presentation events.

Almost 500 students represented Burgmann across 51 teams this year, supported by staff and more than 80 student, parent and alumni volunteers.

We love seeing players return season after season, building friendships across year levels and becoming part of their sport’s wider community. It is particularly special when past students return as coaches, sharing their experience while maintaining their connection with Burgmann.

Thank you to every player, coach, manager, volunteer, parent and staff member who contributed throughout the season. Burgmann sport simply could not happen without you.

It turns out some heroes really do wear capes.

Each morning, Middle School students participating in the Ginninderra Award Program are helping younger students make their way from the Forde drop-off zone to their classrooms.

The Ginninderra Award takes its name from a Ngunnawal word meaning ‘sparkling light’. Just as light helps us find the way, the program guides students in Years 6 to 8 to discover and develop their strengths through servant leadership.

Carpark Heroes began with an idea from Head of Junior School Scott Moore to make morning drop-off easier for families. Students volunteer to arrive early, open car doors, welcome the younger children and walk them safely to class. Parents can remain in their cars, helping the drop-off zone move more efficiently.

It is hard to have a bad start to the school day when a superhero takes you to class!

Words matter, particularly when they help someone feel noticed, heard and supported.

Through our current Words Matter focus, students have been considering how language shapes the way we learn, connect and care for others. R U OK? Day offered another practical way to explore that idea, while reinforcing that meaningful check-ins are part of everyday relationships, not something reserved for one publicised day.

In Middle School, Year 7 students put their learning into action by planning and leading wellbeing activities for Year 6 as part of their Health assessment. Working in small groups, they created activities ranging from physical games and rock painting to gratitude exercises, conversations, origami, board games and puzzles.

Staff also shared a few treats at recess, with a timely reminder to check in with colleagues when the day, week or term becomes busy.

In Senior School, the Rock Band brought students together for a lunchtime concert, combining live music with a reminder that it is OK not to be OK.

Checking in does not need to be complicated. It can begin with making time to talk, share an activity or simply be together.

For 25 years, Burgmann Preschool has been the starting point for some of our youngest students and their families.

Since opening at the Valley Campus in 2001, Preschool has helped generations of children take their first steps into school life. From music and library visits to Year 5 buddies and imaginative play, those early experiences were designed to help children feel part of Burgmann from the beginning.

As Burgmann prepares to bring its three and four-year-old Preschool programs together at Forde in 2027, the latest edition of The Gribble looks back at the people, memories and philosophy that have shaped Preschool over the past quarter of a century.

It is a story about change, but also about what has remained constant, creating a place where children feel known, supported and ready to learn from their very first experience of Burgmann.

Seeds that have travelled to space recently arrived at Burgmann, giving our Years 11 and 12 Earth and Environmental Science students a rare opportunity to investigate whether their time beyond Earth affects how they grow. Through Launch Labz, that opportunity then extended to Year 5.

Science teacher Suren Mendis secured early access to the Launch Labz kits after hearing Australian astronaut Katherine Bennell-Pegg speak at CONASTA. Each kit pairs seeds flown in space with control seeds that remained on Earth, allowing students to compare their germination and growth.

The investigation began with our Senior School students before Year 12 students joined Year 5 classes to help them establish their own experiments.

There was an immediate buzz as the Year 5s donned lab coats and goggles, discussed how conditions in space differ from those on Earth and prepared their test tubes. The younger students loved working alongside their Senior School peers, while the Year 12s were equally enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge, answering questions and guiding the practical work.

This cross-sub-school collaboration made the experience much more than an unusual science experiment. Year 5 students gained access to the knowledge and encouragement of senior students, while the Year 12s applied their learning through explanation and mentoring.

The test tubes are now in the Year 5 classrooms, with students responsible for watering the seeds and recording their observations each week.

A lovely afternoon back at Burgmann.

Thank you to the alumni and former staff who joined us for Back to Burgmann Day last Saturday. It was wonderful to see familiar faces, share memories and spend time reconnecting.

We’re so grateful for the opportunity to keep these connections going.

Throughout the year, guest speakers have joined Year 8 students during Yumma time to open conversations about diversity, inclusion, resilience and different perspectives within our community.

Today, three-time Paralympian Sarah Walsh brought para sport into that conversation.

Sarah spoke about celebrating small wins, holding onto the reason behind a goal and recognising that meaningful achievements are built through difficult days as well as good ones. She also challenged students to consider the barriers people with disability face in accessing sport and how others can help change that.

Sarah reflected that each time she wears the green and gold, she is not only competing for a place on the podium. She is also representing the child watching from home who might now see a future for themselves.

We enjoyed welcoming a group of primary school leaders from across Australia to Burgmann today as part of the 2026 Australian Primary Principals Association Conference.

During their visit, delegates toured the campus and saw SpellEx, part of Burgmann’s literacy program, in action in one of our Year 3 classrooms. The demonstration generated considerable interest, with visitors keen to learn more about the program and how we use it at Burgmann.

It was a valuable opportunity to share ideas and experiences with fellow educators, and to give our visitors a glimpse of learning at Burgmann.

A breakthrough win for Burgmann alumnus Josh Armstrong (Class of 2017), who has claimed his first professional Tour victory at the 2026 PNG Open.

Josh finished 14 under to secure the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia title by two shots. The result moves him to number one on the Tour’s Order of Merit, with appearances at the Australian PGA Championship and Australian Open now ahead.

Congratulations, Josh, on a significant career milestone.
