The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid course teaches participants how to provide initial support to an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis, until professional support is received, or the crisis resolves.

This strengths-based course has been developed and reviewed in consultation with Australia’s First Nations people. The course ensures participants are grounded in social and emotional well-being from an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspective, equipping them with the skills to provide mental health first aid in a culturally safe and informed way.
Course participants learn about the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems in adults, how to recognise and respond to an emerging or worsening mental health problem, and the supports available, including cultural context to community-based care.

Using a practical, evidence-based action plans, course participants learn how to approach someone they are concerned about and initiate a conversation about those concerns. Participants also learn how to offer initial support and information and how to encourage the person to seek professional, cultural and other supports.

Adults who complete the course become Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAiders), equipped with the knowledge, confidence, and skills to provide someone with mental health information and support when it matters most.

This course is recognised by Su***de Prevention Australia as a safe, high-quality, and effective su***de prevention program

Applications are now open for WEX Canberra 2026.

Applications will close on Monday 20 July 2026.

We are seeking applications from Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students in Years 10, 11 and 12 in every state and territory.

WEX Canberra 2026 will be held from Sunday 13 September to Friday 18 September 2026.

The WEX program is an opportunity for First Nations students to learn about careers in the Australian Government while benefiting from leadership development and cultural mentoring.

All accommodation, transport and meals are provided at no cost to students.

Recruitment is currently underway for the 2026/27 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Pathway Program (EPP), with applications now open: http://www.jobs.act.gov.au/jobs/chief-minister-treasury-economic-development/temporary/55151.


The EPP provides a career pathway for young Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students and provides opportunities for ongoing employment with the ACT Government. Please find the program overview attached for further information.

Program overview:

18-month development program combining paid work experience and formal training towards the students’ ACT Secondary School Certificate.
Participants complete an Australian School-based Apprenticeship, achieving a nationally recognised Certificate II qualification.
Participants undertake 8 hours of paid work per week (one day) and 3 hours of study per week.
Ongoing support and mentoring provided by a Group Training Organisation.
On successful completion of the program, participants are appointed to the business area on a full-time permanent basis at the Administrative Services Officer 2 or equivalent classification level.
