Congratulations to our inaugural graduates of the Gender Equality, Power and Public Policy Program! 🎉

The program was designed to equip participants with the knowledge, evidence base and tools to effect change in their workplaces, and to prime their workplaces for gender equality

14 women from a diverse range of professional backgrounds and government portfolios in the Cambodian public sector joined the program, which ran from April to May 2024 and was delivered in partnership with Australia Awards Cambodia

It involved an intensive, one-week study tour in Australia, followed by in-country expert workshops and meetings with participants and their workplaces to improve structural readiness for change

The program was led by Dr Elise Stephenson and Professor Michelle Ryan Ryan, who leveraged their extensive expertise in research, education and gender equality in the Asia Pacific when designing the program

Thank you to all the individuals and organisations who helped formally facilitate this program: Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, eSafety Commissioner, The Office for Women, Susan Harris Rimmer, Leonora Risse, and the Royal Embassy of Cambodia to Australia and New Zealand

Thank you as well to the countless others who took the time to engage with our participants and contribute their insights and expertise

We look forward to continuing to work with Australia Awards Cambodia and others to develop evidence-based approaches to help address the challenges faced by Cambodian women leaders and advance gender equality in the public sector in the region

Breaking barriers and forging pathways towards gender equality in politics | Humanitix 09/05/2024

EVENT: Breaking barriers & forging pathways towards gender equality

⏰ When? Thurs 23 May, 12:30-1:30 pm
📍Where? Online via Zoom

Join us as we share brand new research that shines a light on the barriers preventing politically active women and non-binary people from running for office and explores how we can forge pathways towards greater gender equality in politics.

Our report, prepared in collaboration with Women for Election, asks women and non-binary politically active Australians about the barriers, anticipated support they needed, and systemic changes they would like to see to consider engaging in politics further, including running for political office.

We'll discuss key findings and recommendations from the report, and consider the progress that has been made so far and what still needs to change to advance equality. Plus, you'll hear from candidates and Councillors who'll reflect on their own personal journeys to politics and their advice to anyone looking to embark on a political career themselves but are unsure where to begin.

Young people passionate about political action, but forging new pathways to change 04/03/2024

NEW: Young changemakers care passionately about key political issues, but don’t feel represented or listened to by our political leaders and are turning to alternative routes for action

Our new report finds that young changemakers care passionately about key political issues, but don’t feel represented or listened to by our political leaders, aren’t confident the government will act on their biggest policy concerns, and don’t see politics as a viable career choice.

Fears of unsafe workplaces, disillusionment with politics as an effective tool to achieve change, and the lack of diversity and representation are the key issues turning young people away from politics.

9 in 10 participants say that Federal Government doesn’t represent their perspective or values, and young First Nations and Torres Strait Islanders are even more likely to feel unrepresented than their peers.

The leading policy concerns for young changemakers are the climate emergency, First Nations Rights and addressing gender-based violence – but just 1% of those surveyed say that Federal Government is doing an adequate job addressing these issues.

Yet, this lack of trust in political institutions has not led to political apathy, but rather young people finding and creating alternative ways to become politically active – like starting their own initiatives, volunteering, and using social media for activism.
