Spiritual Reflections and Faith-Based Contemplations on One of the Great Verses of Surah Al-Kahf
Let’s strengthen our Emaan and renew our connection with Allah through one of the most powerful verses in Surah Al-Kahf.
The core message — spiritually and socially:
Stay close and patiently stick with those who constantly turn to Allah in prayer, remembrance, and du‘a.

Allah, the Exalted, says:
“And patiently keep yourself with those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His pleasure. Do not let your eyes look beyond them, desiring the luxuries of this worldly life. And do not obey those whose hearts We have made heedless of Our remembrance, who follow their desires and whose affairs are in excess.”
Surah Al-Kahf — 18:28

This verse opened for me a door of goodness and blessing. It became the key to a cave in which I lived and found refuge, by Allah’s grace and guidance, during a time when I was lonely, lost, depressed and isolated from people, while illnesses and the afflictions of devils had multiplied around me.
This verse holds one of the most beautiful stories of my life. By Allah’s grace, and then through His inspiring me with this verse and enabling me to reflect upon it during a difficult period at the beginning of my married life, it became a reason for me to know and grow close to people who were among the most beautiful righteous companions Allah has blessed me with in my life, and who had a profound impact on my journey.
They were people living in the city of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, striving to follow in his footsteps as much as they could, by Allah’s guidance and enabling grace. I used to feel as though they were from the time of the noble Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
They helped me to remember Allah, and I learned from them—after what I had first learned from my father and mother—through actions before words, a principle that completely changed the course of my life:
from living for myself = to living for the sake of Allah,
and from focusing on this worldly life = to living with the purpose of directing myself towards Allah alone.
So let us reflect upon this verse. Every time I read it, my heart longs for sisters from whom this worldly life has separated me, yet our hearts remain united in loving Allah and living for His sake.

This is one of the great verses containing direct commands and prohibitions addressed to the Prophet ﷺ, and guidance for those who follow him and walk upon his path.

Among the great meanings we learn from Surah Al-Kahf is recognising Allah’s Oneness in Lordship, which leads us to recognise His exclusive right to be worshipped. We come to know our Lord as the Creator, the Provider and the Guardian—the One who takes care of the affairs of His servants, protects them and cares for them. Therefore, He alone deserves our worship, and we worship Him alone with sincere devotion.
To trust Allah and rely upon Him, with certainty that our guardianship, protection and help come from Him, Glorified and Exalted.
Not to become deceived by any strength or knowledge we possess. Every strength, knowledge and ability is from Allah, and whatever we have been given of them is a trust placed in our hands.
“If only you had said, upon entering your property, ‘This is what Allah has willed! There is no power except with Allah!’...”
[Al-Kahf: 39]
To seek our “cave” in times of hardship and trials. Our refuge is to withdraw for moments with Allah through prayer and with the Book of Allah: reading His verses, reflecting upon them, learning their messages, and striving to apply them and live by them.
“So take refuge in the cave. Your Lord will extend His mercy to you and accommodate you in your ordeal.”
[Al-Kahf: 16]
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Among its central messages and values is the truth that all true guardianship belongs to Allah.
“At this point, all protection belongs to Allah, the True One. He is best in reward and best in outcome.”
Recognising Allah’s Oneness in Lordship leads us to His exclusive right to be worshipped.
There is no refuge and no escape from Allah except by returning to Him. He is our Guardian and Protector in this world and the Hereafter. We have no true protector besides Him, and He has neither child nor partner.

It is—and Allah knows best—one of the verses of Al-Furqan: verses that clearly distinguish for us between two different paths:
1. The path of those devoted to calling upon Allah and obeying Him: those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, sincerely seeking Him, and who give preference to the Hereafter over this worldly life.
2. The path of heedlessness, following desires and becoming absorbed in the adornments of worldly life: those who give preference to this world over the Hereafter.

It is a call to the Prophet ﷺ and to all of us, through a direct command from Allah, to patiently keep ourselves in the company of people of obedience—those who call upon their Lord and remember Him throughout the day and night.
The meaning here includes supplication, worship and remembrance: they turn to Allah, worship Him, and remember Him in every circumstance and situation, even if they are poor, needy, or regarded as having a lower social status than others.
Their hearts are occupied with obeying Allah, reflecting upon His signs, and seeking His help in meeting their worldly needs while facing their work, problems and challenges. They remain patient, so you remain patient with them and train yourself to be patient.
And when we obey this command to be patient, that patience is itself an act of worship and a sign of our submission and surrender to Allah, worshipping Him with sincere devotion. We have responded to Allah’s command through another act of worship:
💚 training ourselves to remain patient and steadfast in obedience.
So even when we fall short in the act of obedience itself, we continue to hope for the reward of striving to remain patient and of struggling against our own selves in order to remain steadfast in obedience.
“He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and everything in between. So worship Him and be steadfast in His worship.”
“And command your family to pray, and be steadfast in maintaining it.”
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
That is: do not turn your eyes—your gaze and attention—away from them.
Because there are people who become preoccupied with status, worldly distractions, wealth and worldly success at the expense of the Hereafter.
So, O Muhammad ﷺ—and O those who follow Muhammad ﷺ—do not become among those whose hearts are occupied by the adornments of worldly life. This adornment is temporary: it shines for a time and then disappears as this world disappears.
“But you prefer the worldly life, while the Hereafter is better and more lasting.”
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Islam calls us to live in this world and enjoy what Allah has made lawful for us in it, but to give preference to the Hereafter over this worldly life.
Imagine that we have an apple, and that this apple represents our life...
Some of us divide it into two equal halves: half for this world and half for the Hereafter.
Some make their entire apple about this worldly life.
And some make their entire apple about the Hereafter, without enjoying the lawful blessings Allah has permitted for them in this world.
Some give the greater share—for example, three quarters of the apple—to worldly life. These are those who give preference to this world.
And some give the greater share—three quarters of the apple—to the Hereafter. These are those who live with certainty that “the Hereafter is better and more lasting,” and therefore give preference to the Hereafter over this world.
These are the people whom Islam directs us to take as good examples, to be among them and with them, and not to turn our eyes away from them.
So let us reflect, and let us hold ourselves accountable before we are held accountable...
Which group are you among? And which side of your scale is heavier?
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
That is: they seek Allah alone, seek His pleasure, and sincerely direct their intention and worship to Him.
Allah = their ultimate aim = the purpose of their hearts = the compass directing their words and actions.
“And whoever fully submits themselves to Allah and is a good-doer...”
That is: a person submits themselves, their intention and their actions to Allah, making Him the ultimate direction and purpose of their life.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Here there is a sobering meaning that deserves our attention: the heart becoming heedless of Allah’s remembrance may become both a consequence and a punishment after a person persists in heedlessness, follows their desires, becomes absorbed in worldly life and its adornments, and repeatedly turns away from remembering Allah.
The consequence = the heart becomes increasingly heedless.
The punishment = the servant may be deprived of Allah’s enabling grace to remember Him, return to Him, and draw close to Him.
Allah is the One who guides hearts and grants them the ability and grace to remember Him. A heart that is occupied with Allah is therefore a blessing, a provision, and a gift of divine guidance and enabling grace from Allah. It is a blessing for which we should be grateful, which we should protect, and which we should never respond to with ingratitude by repeatedly turning away and becoming heedless.
So we should not say, “I remember Allah because I am better than others.” Rather, we say:
💚 “All praise is due to Allah, who granted my heart the ability and grace to remember Him.”
His heart became heedless of Allah’s remembrance
= his heart was no longer occupied with remembering Him
= he was no longer granted the enabling grace to remain constant in remembrance and du‘a
= worldly life increasingly took hold of his heart
= it distracted him more and more
= and he became pleased with its temporary and fading adornments.

That is: he gives precedence to his personal desires, passions and impulses over the commands of Allah. He follows his desires, his lower self and Satan instead of bringing them under obedience to Allah.
And we seek refuge in Allah from that.
“Furutan” = loss and neglect = going beyond proper limits = allowing one’s affairs to depart from the sound path.
There is the one who sins and then returns to his Lord.
There is another who struggles with a sin himself, does not encourage others towards it, and continues striving against himself to leave it.
And there is one who sins, goes beyond the limits with defiance and arrogance, and helps others fall into sin.
We seek refuge in Allah from becoming among those who persist stubbornly in sins and acts of disobedience.

This verse continues Allah’s address to His noble Prophet and Messenger ﷺ, commanding him and prohibiting him. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the servant and Messenger of Allah: he is not a son of Allah, nor a partner in His dominion, and he does not know the unseen except for what Allah reveals to him.
This divine address also reminds us of the humanity of our beloved Prophet ﷺ, together with Allah’s choosing him, teaching him and guiding him through revelation.
The Prophet ﷺ was human: a husband, a father and a friend, living within a society that had its customs and traditions. Allah chose him, protected him and guided him so that he would be an example for us.
Before receiving revelation, he ﷺ would retreat to the Cave of Hira, away from the noise of people, spending time in contemplation and reflection.
He would retreat into solitude at that time—to the Cave of Hira—alone in the darkness of the night, contemplating and reflecting.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
So let us remain patient and steadfast with righteous companionship, and let us praise Allah for the blessing of granting our hearts the ability to remember Him.
And let us continually ask Him not to make us among those whose hearts become heedless of His remembrance, and to keep our hearts steadfast upon Him.
All praise is due to Allah and by His grace. All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all worlds.
