As Director at AGAPE ARTS, I frequently become frustrated at the way reading pitch notation is taught. Still today many students come to us for lessons who have been taught the old “Every Good Boy Deserves Fruit” system, where children often apply that menomic to the bass clef line notes as well as to the treble clef line notes - obviously without success!
There are many other good systems, including a fairly new publication by the amazing Jackie Sharpe ( from Hurstville )which I will talk about another time, but please have a look at this. I have just ordered the Wilbecks Easy Notes Teachers’Kit and am keen to learn about it and try it with a couple of new students who are struggling to understand the written music language. I think logically, rather than in pictures, but Rebecca Wilson, the owner and writer of this program assures me it can work for anyone! Rebecca is a piano teacher in Hamilton, New Zealand, and as a “ex NZer”, I’m keen to spread the word for her!

Learn how to use powerful teaching tools to teach your beginner students to solidly know four octaves of notes on the music staff and how they relate to the notes on the piano so they will become strong music readers

AGAPE students who are preparing to sit for an AMEB piano exam in term 4 this year, must let your teacher or Heather Bieman know this week - entries must be in to the AMEB by September 1st. Exams will most likely take place at AGAPE / Camden Uniting Church on a Saturday in November. Other local piano teachers will possibly be able to have their students do their exams here - we are an approved AMEB examining venue. Email info@ agapemusic.org.au for more details. South West Sydney Orchestra (SWSO) organised an excellent Macarthur Performing Arts event which was held at Camden Uniting Church today. Piano students, a few violin students, two flute students, a cello student, and two oboe students all received a medallion and Performance Feedback Sheet written by an adjudicator, as well as enthusiastic applause from the audience. Musical talent is “alive and well” in South West Sydney! AGAPE ARTS-Camden is proud to sponsor SWSO! Thank you to James Patmore of Piano Direction who came in early this morning to tune the Yamaha Grand so it was in top condition for the performers.

The guitar is one of the most widely played instruments in the world, and it seems to have instant appeal. If you are a parent of a child who is 7 or over who is keen to play guitar, you might like to bring them in for an “obligation free” meet and greet before you sign up for lessons. Contact details are below the photo of Max Buakao, guitar tutor.
