🌿🐴 A Little Farm Adventure! 🐦
Today our farm animals came along for a walk around the duck pond and park! The children created little farm shelters from sticks and leaves, then helped their animals clip-clop across the rocks. 🐄🐑
Our biggest surprise was being followed around the pond by two very curious baby magpies and a couple of waterbirds! 🐦 They came so close and kept us company for almost the whole walk.

🐄 Farm Animal Pens & Fine Motor Fun 🐖

Today, we began our morning with some wonderful fine motor practice, threading colourful pony beads and soft foam beads onto pipe cleaners to create our own bracelets. This was a great opportunity to practise our pincer grip, using our thumb and index finger to carefully pick up, position, and thread each bead. The children worked with concentration and persistence as they experimented with different colours and patterns, strengthening the small muscles in their hands and fingers that support future skills such as drawing, writing, and self-care.

We then extended our puncer grip practice by linking it back to our Farm monthly program by using wooden pegs and construction sticks to create fences for our farm animals. The children carefully attached the pegs to the sticks, again using controlled finger movements and hand strength before balancing and arranging their fencing into triangle and square animal pens.

Once the pens were constructed, the farm animals were introduced, and the children enjoyed deciding which animals belonged in each enclosure. This extended our play into early mathematical and spatial learning as we explored shapes, balance, positioning, and problem-solving while also encouraging imaginative play, language development, and cooperation. It was lovely to see the children take their fine motor skills from a tabletop experience and then apply them purposefully within their farm-world play. 🌾🐑🐄

Farmyard Yoga Adventure 🐄🌻🧘‍♀️

Today we enjoyed a fun and active Cosmic Kids Yoga story as we went on a farmyard adventure! The children followed along with the story, copying the different movements and yoga poses as we explored the farm together. We stretched, balanced, moved our bodies and practised listening carefully so we could follow the story and join in with each new movement.

Yoga provided a wonderful opportunity to develop gross motor skills, balance, coordination, body awareness and core strength, while also encouraging concentration and persistence as the children worked to copy the movements. We also talked about farm animals and incorporated imaginative play into our movements, helping to build language, listening and comprehension skills. Pom Pom Transfer & Fine Motor Fun

Today we explored a fun fine-motor activity using mini tongs, colourful pom poms and circle outlines. The children carefully used the tongs to pick up each pom pom and place it along the lines of the circles, before transferring the pom poms into jars.

This simple activity provided lots of opportunities to strengthen the small muscles in little hands and develop hand–eye coordination. Using the mini tongs encouraged the children to practise a controlled pincer-style grip, building the finger strength and dexterity needed for everyday skills such as drawing, using utensils, dressing and eventually writing. Reaching across the body to place pom poms on different parts of the circles also encouraged crossing the midline, supporting coordination between both sides of the body and developing the foundations for more complex movements.

There was plenty of concentration involved as the children carefully positioned each pom pom and worked out how to squeeze and release the tongs. Some pom poms had other ideas and rolled away! Rather than giving up, the children persisted by chasing, retrieving and trying again, demonstrating growing persistence, problem-solving and self-regulation. Their sustained focus as they completed the circles and transferred the pom poms into the jars also encouraged confidence, independence and a sense of achievement.

A lovely little activity that looked simple on the surface but provided so many opportunities for developing coordination, fine-motor strength, concentration and perseverance through playful learning. 🌈✨

We extended our learning through a hands-on balancing challenge using our small wooden farm animals and a rounded-bottom boat.

The children were invited to carefully place the animals onto the boat and explore what happened as they added, moved and rearranged them. The curved base made the boat wobble and tip, encouraging the children to slow down, concentrate and experiment with where each animal needed to be positioned to help keep the boat balanced. This provided a wonderful opportunity to explore balance, stability, weight and cause and effect through playful investigation.

As the children tried different combinations, they developed problem-solving and early mathematical thinking as they considered position, size, quantity and spatial relationships. They were encouraged to make predictions, test their ideas and adjust their approach when the boat tipped, building persistence and confidence as they worked towards keeping their animals safely balanced.

Handling the small wooden animals also supported fine-motor development, hand-eye coordination and controlled movements, while the open-ended nature of the experience allowed each child to experiment at their own pace and develop their own strategies.

There was lots of concentration, careful placing and plenty of excitement as we discovered just how many little farm animals our wobbly boat could hold! 🐷🐮🐴⛵️💕

Today, we enjoyed reading Big Pig and Piglet, following the adventures of two pigs as they explored the farm and discovered the differences between big and small. The story encouraged the children to listen, engage with the characters, and begin thinking about size, comparison, and opposites in a fun and meaningful way.

We then brought our story to life by creating our own pigs! We began by using watercolour paints to create colourful pig faces, giving the children the opportunity to experiment with colour, brush control, and different painting movements. As they painted, they developed their fine-motor strength and coordination while expressing their own creativity and making individual choices about how their pig would look.

Once the paint had dried, we added triangle-shaped cardboard ears, glittery round nose, and googly eyes. The children explored shapes, positioning, and spatial awareness as they decided where each feature should go, while gluing and placing the small pieces encouraged concentration, hand-eye coordination and developing fine-motor control.

To finish our pigs, we twirled pipe cleaners around our fingers to create curly tails before gluing them onto our pictures. This provided another wonderful opportunity to strengthen little hands and practise coordination, while the twisting and curling action introduced an element of cause and effect, manipulation, and problem-solving.

Through our story and creative experience today, the children were able to connect literacy with hands-on learning, explore early mathematical concepts such as size and shapes, develop their fine-motor and creative skills, and confidently express their own ideas through art. Most importantly, we had lots of fun turning our Big Pig and Piglet story into our very own colourful little piggy creations! 🐷

Today, Miss 3yo spent some lovely time exploring our geometric magnetic tiles and creating her own patterns and designs on the magnetic board. She carefully selected different shapes and colours, experimenting with how they could be positioned and combined.

As she worked, she demonstrated wonderful concentration, persistence, and curiosity while developing her early mathematical thinking, pattern recognition, shape awareness, spatial awareness, problem-solving, and fine motor skills.

The activity soon grew into something even more imaginative when she brought her teddies over to join in. She incorporated them into her play, creating interactions and using her imagination to give meaning and purpose to the experience.

Through this role play, she was developing her language and communication skills, social and emotional understanding, creativity, and ability to express ideas through play while also exploring nurturing and caring relationships.

It was wonderful to see how confidently she moved between constructing, experimenting, and imaginative play, following her own ideas, and extending the experience in a way that was meaningful to her.

This kind of open-ended play provides opportunities to build independence, confidence, problem-solving skills, creativity, coordination, and a strong sense of being a capable and curious learner. 🌿
