When COVID put international travel on pause, thousands of students around the world lost the opportunity they had been saving for month by month - the chance to experience cultural exchange through travel.

At Banora, we knew connection didn’t have to stop just because borders closed.

We quickly adapted, offering our partner schools the opportunity to join us online through interactive virtual programs and the response was incredible. Together with international and local schools including Newman College, Peace Lutheran College and TAS, we created meaningful cultural exchange experiences connecting students, host families and farm hosts from across the globe.

We also partnered with incredible local businesses including CAPTA and Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures to deliver engaging educational programs virtually from their sites, bringing a piece of Australia directly to students around the world.

We’d also like to say a heartfelt thank you to all of our schools, host families, farm hosts and industry partners who supported Banora during COVID and helped us remain connected to our students abroad. Innovation, connection and community have always been at the heart of what we do, no matter the circumstances 🤍

The Banora students get fully-immersed in the Australian way of life, but also have the opportunity to share their own culture and traditions with students at schools during their stay.

This beautiful cultural exchange promotes deeper understanding, supports learning and promotes connection.

❓What have you learned as a host family, or as a student during your Banora experience?

The connections that stay with you long after you leave 💛

For many Banora students, the experience isn’t just about where they go, it’s about who they meet. Living with host families means sharing meals, stories, traditions, and everyday moments that turn into something much deeper. The goodbyes are often filled with tears… but they’re not the end. These bonds cross borders, time zones, and years - staying strong through messages, calls, and even return visits.

Meet Carmel 💛

Together with her husband Frank, she runs a family farm in Mareeba and for the past 6 years, they’ve welcomed over 100 Banora students into their home.

What starts as a stay quickly becomes something more! Carmel loves sharing our beautiful region, teaching students how to cook Italian-style, and bringing them into daily farm life which includes picking and packing fruit alongside the family.

She’s always struck by the students who arrive: well-mannered, curious, and eager to help. One group of boys even asked if they could miss the bus back to Cairns… just to stay a little longer.

And the connection doesn’t end there.

Years later, Carmel is still in touch with many of her students - through emails, Christmas cards, and photos of recipes they’ve recreated at home.

Thank you Carmel and Frank!

Real students. Real experiences. Real impact 💬

We could talk about the Banora experience all day, but we think it means more when you hear it directly from the students who lived it 🥰

Tourism becomes more meaningful when it’s about connection, not just destinations.

In partnership with Tourism Tropical North Queensland, our region offers far more than incredible landscapes and wildlife. We creates space for connection, learning and experiences that stay with you 🧡🌏

Our programs are not just about what students see and experience, it’s about their contribution to our region. Every experience is an opportunity to leave the place, its people, and its ecosystems stronger.

Happy Birthday to Michael, one of our fearless leaders... and fastest feet on the beach 😉

He has an ability to create strong connections with everyone he meets, including the students who come to stay.

One day, a group of students decided to challenge Michael to a race… and the story that followed is one he’ll never forget.

It’s moments like these that show what Banora is really about 🧡

Trying new foods is a big part of the adventure when you come to Australia, and for many of our students, it’s their first introduction to some very iconic Aussie flavours! 🇦🇺

🥧 Meat pies? Usually a hit.
🍫 Tim Tams? Gone in seconds.
🍞 Vegemite? Well… that one tends to get a very mixed reaction.

These small moments often become the memories students talk about long after they’ve returned home.
