After a collaborative effort between the Cassowary council, the Mandubarra Rangers, Military, cowley beach caravan park, Tangaroa blue and the local community, this stunning coastline has now over 700kg less plastic - just ahead of the Turtle nesting season. Thank you for all the support

We did it! It was Parley Australia's biggest beach expedition ever – and it was only possible because of you and your sandy, sweaty, spectacular efforts.
It was the first time we’ve ever cleaned that entire stretch of coastline. It definitely wasn’t easy (and I hope the aches and pains are starting to fade!). To our new and returning volunteers, we are so grateful for everyone who joined us, all 50 of you.

Here’s what we achieved:

Covered 10 km of the stunning Cape Bedford coastline.

Removed over 14 tonnes of marine debris - including over 1 tonne of PET bottles and glass, now at Containers for Change in Portsmith, and including 2 tonnes removed by the Melbourne group B-alternative.

Thank you for whatever role you played!

Thank you to the rope wranglers, boat excavators, tree climbers, and the unimpressed hill climbers. To the buoy bandits and hacksaw heroes.
To the PET legends, FAD finders, thong flingers, and microplastic whisperers. To the weigh station statisticians, back-of-the-truck balancers, and hessian bag fillers and the ones who kept feeding us.

This meaningful mission was carried out in close collaboration with Traditional Owner Ivan Deemal, whose guidance and connection to Country were central to our work. Partnering with Ivan ensured that our efforts respected the cultural significance of the land and aligned with the values of care, stewardship and deep listening to Country.

This expedition was about restoration, community, and reconnection — with nature, with each other, and with the custodians of this land. When we work together — guided by Traditional knowledge, science, and shared purpose — we show what’s possible for the ocean and for the planet.

🌊🌿 Coastal Cleanup Success at Dungarra (Redden Island), Cairns! 🌿🌊

This past Saturday, March 22, 23 amazing and tenacious Parley volunteers dedicated 2 hours to a coastal cleanup at the mouth of the Barron River. 🌞 Despite the site looking clean at first glance, we unearthed a surprising 81.2 kgs of washed-up rubbish! 💪

It just goes to show that even when a place looks pristine, a closer look can reveal hidden waste, especially as the sand constantly shifts. Much of the debris we found was from local sources, likely carried in by the recent wet season flooding and the proximity to urban areas. 🌧️🏙️

The weather was perfect, the vibes were relaxed, and we all had a blast knowing we were doing our part for the environment. It was the perfect way to spend a Saturday, and we couldn’t have asked for a better group of volunteers. 🙌

A huge thank you to everyone who came out to help make a difference! Together, we’re working toward cleaner shores and a healthier planet. 🌍💚

🌊🌿 Incredible Day of Action at Wangal Djungay (Double Island)! 🌿🌊

What an amazing day of teamwork and dedication! 🙌 14 passionate volunteers kayaked from Palm Cove to the beautiful Wangal Djungay (Double Island) to take part in an important clean-up effort. 💪

Together, we collected an impressive 63kg of rubbish – the majority being PET bottles and harmful polystyrene. Every piece picked up makes a difference in preserving this stunning island. 🌱

Thank you to Oceans 2 Earth Volunteers for their dedication and huge hands-on effort. 🌏💚

Also, a huge shout-out to Brad from Palm Cove Watersports for not only joining us in the clean-up but also providing the kayaks for the journey! Brad's passion for protecting this island and the environment is truly inspiring. 🚣‍♂️💙

Thank you to everyone who helped make this day such a success. Let’s keep working together to safeguard our coastlines and ensure a cleaner, healthier future for our planet.

🌊 Field Trip to Low Isles: Protecting Our Oceans! 🌿🐠

This week, Parley Australia teamed up with the Australian Marine Conservation Society, Windswell, and the Low Isles Preservation Society for an unforgettable trip to Low Isles—a stunning yet fragile marine ecosystem.

Our cleanup crew removed:
✔️ 1 abandoned ship's rope
✔️ 2 discarded fish aggregation devices
✔️ 1 incredibly long longline
✔️ Several other rope lengths
✔️ 1 broken fishing boat fish crate
✔️ 1 hubcap & more marine debris

Beyond the cleanup, we toured Woody Island on SUP and Low Isles on foot and engaged in meaningful discussions on solving marine waste at its source, managing the collected materials, and the power of education in ocean conservation. 🌍💙

One thing we all agreed on? Our love for the ocean began with positive immersion experiences in childhood—a reminder that fostering a connection with nature is key to protecting it for future generations. 🌱✨

📢 Let’s keep working together to protect our blue planet! 🌊💪

🌱💚 Mangrove Clean-Up Success! 💚🌱

A huge shoutout to our 12 incredible volunteers who braved the rain, mud and pesky mosquitoes to clean up the mangroves at Tingira Street on Wednesday, 19th February! 🙌 Despite the weather, these dedicated heroes collected a staggering 81kg of trash over just 150m!

Among the items removed were some big offenders like a large foam mattress, polystyrene, and PET and glass bottles. We made sure recyclables, like PET, aluminium cans, and glass bottles, were taken to Containers for Change, raising money for Rainforest Rescue to plant more trees and help offset our carbon footprint. 🌳🌍

Much of the rubbish collected came from local sources, a reminder for us all to do our part to dispose of our waste responsibly before it reaches our precious waterways! Together, we can keep these vital ecosystems healthy for future generations. 🌊✨

Special mention to our friends at White Whale Coffee Roasters who donate their coffee bean bags to Parley to use as cleanup bags - and roast the best coffee in FNQ.

Some 2,000 years ago, the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu allegedly said, “If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading.” Consider the path humanity is on today, one of overconsumption, exploitation, division and fear. In a sea of colliding and compounding crises, pull out the synthetic threat we each connect to in a tactile way every day: plastics.

The world has produced more than 8.3 billion tons of plastics since the 1950s. Almost all of it remains on this planet as some form of waste. Plastic has been found in every known environment and living thing that scientists have been able to test. It’s even in our brains. And yet, if we put our minds to it, we can change. What if it’s plastic, a material once beloved for its shape-shifting flexibility, that finally pulls us together and slides us toward reinvention?

We can course-correct, slither through difficult times and push ourselves into something new. In the movement and strength of the snake, we see a reminder that change is the sole constant and that what we seek is already within us. The question for the challenging present is, how will we adapt? Here’s to a year of grounded growth, together.

🌊 Marine Debris Clean-Up in Action! 🌊

Last Friday, we teamed up with the amazing folks at the Cairns Cruising Yacht Squadron to tackle marine debris head-on! 🛥️💪

Thanks to their effort, we picked up a huge pile of 10 dumped tyres from the across the inlet. These tires, brought in by CCYS members, were then transported to the Cairns Regional Council Waste Transfer Station for recycling.

This is just one step toward protecting our precious Great Barrier Reef and coastal ecosystems from the harm caused by marine debris. 🌿✨

A massive thank you the Cairns Cruising Yacht Squadron and General Manager for being champions of sustainability and to all the yachties who are making a difference!

🚨 Got large marine debris to dispose of? Join us in our mission to clean up the coast and keep our waters pristine. Reach out, and let’s work together! [email protected]
