Holloways Beach Community Garden

A community garden is an area used for growing plants which has been collaboratively created and is maintained by members of the public. A community garden can take place on public or private land and can involve a broad cross-section of the public, as in a neighbourhood community garden. Or it can involve specific sectors of the population, such as a school garden that involves students, teachers, parents, and other community members who support the garden for education.

New membership applicant G T Frog. He hopped in to help with this morning's Working Bee but had a bit of trouble picking up the pen! We've made him an honorary member anyway 😁

Merry Christmas to all our members and supporters.

Below are some photos of yesterday's Christmas event at the garden.
Thanks to all who attended and especially to Elf for her wonderful Christmas gingerbread house which was a great hit. Also below is our decorated Christmas tree , a living Lemon Myrtle, which we can also use in years to come (a live Christmas tree is a great way to help the environment).

Many thanks also to Monika who has been doing a stirling job organising and running the regular Thursday morning working bees. Monika is taking a well-earned break so we won't be having these regular mornings until further notice.

Merry Christmas to all.

We have now completed the installation of new garden beds replacing some older beds which were damaged or unsafe.
This work was completed through a generous grant from Cairns City Council under their GoClubs Infrastructure Assistance grant scheme.
The photos show completed beds which have been filled with soil, mulched and planted out. The second last photo shows what remains of 7 cubic metres of soil which was also purchased by the funds from the grant.
It has been a big joint effort by members to assemble the beds, fill them, add mulch and plant seedlings and as you can see from the photos they are flourishing.

The funding made available by Cairns Regional Council is greatly appreciated and is a major contributor to the successful running of our beautiful garden.

Just ONE WEEK to go until the Aussie Bird Count kicks off! 🐦💚

From 20–26 October, Australians everywhere will be spending 20 minutes counting the birds around them – in backyards, local parks, schoolyards and favourite nature spots.

Whether you’re a seasoned bird lover or just enjoy spending time in nature, the Aussie Bird Count is for you. It’s easy, fun, and a great way to get to know your local birds.

Right now, one in six Australian birds faces the threat of extinction – which means every bird counts! 💚

👉 Haven’t signed up yet? Now’s the time: aussiebirdcount.org.au

Will you be joining us for the Aussie Bird Count? Drop a bird emoji in the comments! 🐦

Today we unveiled our new Garden sign which now adorns our fence proudly announcing the garden to residents and visitors as they come down Oleander Street.

The beautiful sign was painted by the lovely Anna, a garden member and a creative artist.

Anna and other garden members and friends attended the unveiling and morning tea.
