Around the world, education reforms are taking place to equip young people with a mix of 21st Century skills. The Australian education system routinely fails children from low socio-economic backgrounds, Indigenous children and those in remote communities. A developed country like Australia should not accept that a child’s background determines their educational success. Ultimately, success depend

s on the quality of the teaching delivered to students in classrooms so they are equipped with the skills the 21st Century workforce requires. International evidence shows delivery of excellent education needs a single keystone —effective instruction. To create positive change, Good to Great Schools Australia’s (GGSA) has embarked on a program which offers change to education as a whole — students, teachers, families, communities and cultures. The organisation’s case for reform is derived from its comprehensive policy analysis, which is based on nearly two decades of research and international evidence. From this, GGSA has developed education reform based on effective instruction that is continually innovated in its schools through real school practice and continuous coaching and training. The organisation’s education reform is co-designed with students, families, teachers, schools, education systems and education experts who exemplify leadership and are committed to improving education in their respective communities. GGSA’s choices of effective instruction methods are Direct Instruction (DI) and Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI); international evidence shows that they are most effective to help students to learn faster, more efficiently and more effectively. Showcasing GGSA’s education-reform philosophy is its Cape York Academy (CYA), which operates school campuses in Aurukun, Coen and Hope vale.

𝟱𝟴.𝟭% 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗮 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀.

On top of that, understaffing in lower secondary schools has risen from 14% in 2018 to 42% in 2024. This September, students from Coen and Hope Vale head to Cairns for Band Camp 2026! A week of music, dance and choir, working side-by-side with professional musicians, all leading up to the Yarrabah Music and Cultural Festival.

From learning new rhythms to bringing traditional dance into every rehearsal, it's a week of building skills, friendships and confidence that go far beyond the stage.

This year also marks 𝟭𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 of Good to Great Schools Australia coordinating Band Camp for Cape York students. 💛
