Windy evening at Pagans in the Park tonight, with the mountains glowing in the colours of the sunset.

We shared our usual laughter and conversations, until someone raised a thoughtful topic: how do we navigate October in Australia with the growing popularity of Halloween?

The group had different perspectives. Some felt Halloween and Samhain are not the same, and that treating them as separate observances makes more sense here. Samhain marks the turning inward, honouring ancestors and the thinning of the veil, but in the Southern Hemisphere the seasonal wheel spins the other way.

For us, the next Sabbat is Beltane – a time of fertility, fire, and passion. It’s when the Earth is bursting with life, blossoms are everywhere, and energies of creation and connection are at their strongest. Traditionally, Beltane celebrates love, growth, sensuality, and the spark between the divine feminine and masculine – a celebration of life at its peak.

So while the Northern Hemisphere is deep in Samhain and Halloween, we in the Southern Hemisphere can embrace Beltane and Halloween together. The playful spookiness of Halloween blends with the joyous fertility of Beltane, creating a uniquely Australian way of celebrating this time of year.

The first supermoon of 2025 will grace the night sky on October 6, appearing large in the night sky with Saturn close to its right.

On Monday, October 6, 2025, the full Harvest Moon reaches peak illumination at 11:47 P.M. Eastern Time. This is the first of three supermoons in 2025, making it the largest and brightest full Moon of the year.

The Harvest Moon gets its name from farming folklore about how the full Moon's light enables farmers to gather crops late into the night.

For the best view, look for the Moon rising in the east at sunset on October 6. The Moon appears largest when rising or setting, so open landscapes like fields, parks, or waterfronts add scale and drama.

Celebrating Ostara in the Southern Hemisphere

Ostara, also known as the Spring Equinox, marks the time when day and night are equal, a perfect balance between light and dark. From here, the days grow longer, the sun stronger, and the earth bursts into life. It is a celebration of fertility, renewal, and the promise of abundance.

At home, Ostara can be honored in simple and meaningful ways:

Decorate with flowers and greenery to welcome the energy of new growth.

Plant seeds or tend to your garden, symbolising intentions you wish to grow in your own life.

Create a balanced altar with symbols of light and dark, such as candles, eggs, seeds, or stones.

Enjoy seasonal foods, especially fresh fruits, greens, and baked goods, to align with the turning of the season.

Reflect on balance in your own life and what new beginnings you want to embrace.

Ostara reminds us that life continually renews itself. Just as the earth awakens, so too can we awaken our own creativity, goals, and hopes for the coming months.

For us, we planted some more marigolds to dry to make tea and tomatoe plants and collected some leaves to paint over the school holidays to the decorate with. I think we might make a wreath for the door with them.

Today I was given this lovely sign for one of my little Apothecary spaces.
And last week I was gifted this lovely tea pot for my herbal teas I create with my own home grown herbs.

Apothecary, once the art of preparing and dispensing remedies from herbs, oils, and natural elements, has a long history of supporting health and wellbeing. While modern medicine has taken the forefront, many of these time-honored practices still hold value in our daily lives.

In today’s homes, an apothecary approach can mean building a mindful collection of herbs, teas, tinctures, and essential oils to support balance, ease, and comfort. Lavender may be used to encourage restful sleep, peppermint for clarity and digestion, chamomile for calming the nervous system, or rosemary for focus and memory.

It’s not only about remedies for the body but also nurturing the mind and spirit. Creating herbal blends, making simple salves, or brewing supportive teas can become rituals of self-care and connection with nature.

An apothecary at home does not need to be complicated. It begins with curiosity, learning, and gradually incorporating natural supports into your daily life. Over time, it becomes a way to live with more intention, honoring both tradition and wellbeing.
