Master Iwata Genzo was born on October 6, 1958, in Saitama Prefecture. From an early age, he was immersed in the world of Karate under the guidance of his father, Late Osensei Iwata Manzo, a respected figure in traditional Japanese martial arts. Growing up in this environment gave him a deep understanding of discipline, humility, and the classical principles that shape the foundation of Sh*toryu Karate. His early training established the strong technical and philosophical base that would influence his entire life and prepare him for future leadership within the global Karate community.
In 1982 he achieved 5th Dan in both JKF Sh*tokai and the Japan Karate Federation, marking an important milestone in his technical development. His dedication to refinement and mastery continued, and in 1988 he received the Shihan qualification from JKF Sh*tokai. In 1993 he succeeded as the fifth headmaster of Nanban Satto Ryu (Jujutsu). This succession represented the continuation of a significant martial lineage and also demonstrated the trust placed in him as a guardian of traditional Japanese Karate and its deep historical roots.
Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, Master Iwata Genzo’s leadership responsibilities grew steadily. In 1998 he became the Head Instructor of the JKF Sh*tokai Headquarters Dojo (Honbu Dojo), where he guided many students and instructors and played a central role in technical education. In 2000 he was appointed Technical Director of JKF Sh*tokai, a position that required both deep knowledge and a vision for the future of the style. In 2003 he was selected as a Council Member of the Japan Karate Federation. The same year he earned 7th Dan and obtained the Senior Coach qualification from the Japan Sports Association. These achievements showed his recognition not only within Sh*tokai but across Japan’s entire Karate structure.
His progress continued over the following decade. In 2007 he received 8th Dan from JKF Sh*tokai, reflecting his technical excellence, long-standing commitment, and respected position among senior instructors. In 2008 he was appointed Director General of JKF Sh*tokai, strengthening his role in organizational leadership and technical oversight. In 2009 he received the title of Kyoshi from the Japan Karate Federation. In 2016 he joined the Central Technical Committee of the Japan Karate Federation, one of the most influential bodies determining standards and direction for Karate in Japan. The same year, he also received the title of Hanshi from JKF Sh*tokai, representing the highest level of respect and recognition within the style.
In February 2017 he became President (Kaicho) of JKF Sh*tokai, marking a new chapter in his leadership. His influence and responsibilities expanded further, as he guided both the technical and organizational direction of Sh*tokai within Japan. His technical ranking continued to rise. In 2021 he received 8th Dan from the Japan Karate Federation and the title of Hanshi from the same federation, affirming his standing at the highest level of Karate expertise and teaching in Japan. In 2022 he obtained the First Degree Examiner qualification (Ikkyu Shinsain) from the Japan Karate Federation. In addition to these qualifications, he serves as one of the technical members of the All Japan Karate Federation JKF, contributing to national standards, judging criteria, and the preservation of traditional Karate values.
Today, Master Iwata Genzo holds two of the most important leadership positions in the world of Sh*toryu. He is the President (Kaicho) of the World Sh*toryu Karate Federation, leading practitioners around the globe, supporting international development, and preserving the legacy of Kaiso Kenwa Mabuni and his father Late Osensei Iwata Manzo. He is also the President (Kaicho) of the All Japan Karate Federation Sh*tokai, guiding the organization that continues to represent one of the most authentic lines of classical and pure Sh*toryu in Japan. His lifetime of service, technical depth, and dedication to the traditions of Karate have placed him at the center of Sh*toryu development both in Japan and worldwide.
