🖤💚💙 MABO DAY — 3 JUNE 💙💚🖤

Today we acknowledge and honour the life, courage and legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo, a Meriam man whose determination and bravery helped change the course of Australian history.

Mabo Day commemorates the historic 1992 High Court of Australia decision in Mabo v Queensland (No 2), which overturned the legal fiction of terra nullius, the idea that this land belonged to “no one” before British colonisation.

This landmark decision recognised what Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have always known:

🖤🖤that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have deep spiritual, cultural and physical connections to Mother Earth
💚💛that our Peoples had their own laws, customs, languages and ways of living long before colonisation
💙❤️and that Native Title rights did-and do-exist.

The Mabo decision paved the way for the Native Title Act 1993 and became one of the most significant moments in Australia’s journey toward truth telling, justice and reconciliation.

Sadly, Eddie Koiki Mabo passed away just months before the decision was handed down, but his legacy continues to guide generations today 👣

Mabo Day also reminds us of the importance of:

🖤 standing strong in culture and identity
🖤 listening and learning
🖤 acknowledging history
🖤 and continuing the journey toward reconciliation together.

Our Pre-Kindy children have been busy combining playdough, stones, and natural materials to bring their ideas to life. Through open-ended exploration, children experimented with balance, design, and construction, carefully placing and arranging stones to create unique structures and imaginative worlds.

Experiences like these encourage creativity, problem-solving, fine motor development, and persistence, while allowing children to express their own ideas through play. ✨

Our children have been busy caring for our garden, carefully watering the plants and learning about the important role water plays in helping living things grow. Through hands-on experiences like these, children develop a sense of responsibility, nurture their connection with nature, and discover the joy of caring for their environment.

🪱🌱 Our Worm Farm Adventure! 🌱🪱

Today, the children worked together to create their very own worm farm! Through this hands-on experience, they explored sustainability, learned about composting, and discovered the important role worms play in helping to recycle food scraps and create nutrient-rich soil.

The children were actively involved in setting up the layers, adding organic materials, and carefully introducing the worms to their new home. This project encourages curiosity, responsibility, and a deeper understanding of how we can care for our environment.

We can’t wait to watch our worm farm grow and see what the children discover along the way! ♻️🌿
