I do - we do - you do - repeat!
Teaching children how to love and care for animals from under 12months Guinea π· π
I DO - Here I modelled my love, joy and care for our pet Guinea pigs and how to be gentle and patient while holding the carrot and waiting for the Guinea pig to peek out and nibble. I held the carrot steady and then talked sweetly to the Guinea pig.
WE DO - next I supported the baby to do it with me by helping him to hold the carrot steady and explaining to him about how the Guinea pig is feeling and then sharing his surprise and joy when the Guinea pig came out to greet him.
YOU DO - finally I gave the baby the opportunity to do it for himself. If he didnβt want to, that would be okay, I would offer him a chance next time. But he did want to, and he even snuck in a little nose pat.
Repeat - now On another day, I can show the baby the carrot and ask βwould you like to feed the carrot to the Guinea pigs?β And do it all again and watch how the baby takes more lead and eventually can do it all himselfβ¦ and if he really enjoyed it, he might start to initiate it by going to the fridge himself and guiding me to the piggies.

Connection to Noahβs Ark Unique Philosophy to Teaching and Learning
NAP.12: I believe that pets are an invaluable way for children to foster love and concern for nature and others around them. Children learn that the world is a joke for a diverse range of species including people, animals and plants and that all are uniquely admirable and valuable. Through animals, children are able to develop their empathy, concern, appreciation and connection to other living things and to each other. I incorporate our pets and outdoor natural environments into the learning program and role model being responsible and sensitive to all living beings. This enables children to develop their own connection to others around them.
