Lungeing is more than simply getting a horse moving before a rider gets on. It can help warm up the horse, assess soundness, manage excess energy and establish responsiveness before mounting.

But safety matters at every stage. From securing the arena and preparing the tack to positioning the rider safely and using the lunge correctly, good preparation can help reduce risks and create a more controlled riding session.

It’s also important to introduce equipment such as side reins during the lungeing warm-up if they will be used during the lesson, rather than trying them for the first time with a rider onboard.
