This is how the best do it! Instead of just setting your line and hoping for the best, Nic is watching the wave down the line and timing these high line as he is going to be deep in the barrel. This allows him to get over those foam balls and stay above his board.

When surfers are struggling to finish there popup with composure, I like to give them this cue to see if they can do it.

So we land the back foot, then remain on our fingertips until after that front foot lands giving us a moment with 4 points of contact (both feet and hands) on our board before standing up a little.

Yes this is how I always pop up and this is how I teach it!

Santi Medeiro shows us how… Late takeoffs are a pretty interesting part of surfing, especially when we look closely.

This is a part of surfing that not many coaches really dive into. For me, I could always make late drops on backhand back kinda struggled on forehand. It wasn’t until I really studied it that it started clicking. Here’s where I learnt

1- Its all about positioning!

If you want to get some crazy tubes, it’s a must to position right and this usually means sitting behind the peak or right on it. If you sit wide, chances are the drop will actually be harder in sucky waves and even if you do make it, youll be out of position and miss the honey hole anyway! You wanted to be driving from behind the barrel section.

2- That AI shoulder roll

Andy Irons will forever be one of the greatest surfers in many aspects including late/crazy takeoffs. There is timeless photos of him taking of at backdoor with his right shoulder really rolled over and forward, really helping him get down the wave.
