A local developer has submitted plans to the Shire of Capel for a tiny homes community.

The Boyanup development would include 49 tiny homes, a caretaker’s plot, and a community vegetable garden.

Community Housing Initiative spokesperson Vangy Baker says the community could be a novel approach to the broader housing crisis in the South West.

"Getting a loan for people to have that kind of infrastructure just seems ridiculous nowadays, and we've got to look at more alternative, realistic, affordable options for people,” she says.

“There’s a real movement towards people wanting to return back to multigenerational kind of living and shared living.”

“This gives a real opportunity for a small space of land to be productive and shared for a group of people.”

The application is open for public comment until June 30.
