When you find out you’re pregnant, you may assume your maternity care options will be explained to you.

Your pregnancy has been confirmed, your GP has sent your hospital referral, and you leave thinking:

“Okay... they’ll tell me what happens next.”

But one of the things we don’t talk about enough in early pregnancy is that you may have different maternity care options available to you.

Depending on where you live, options such as midwifery continuity of care or Midwifery Group Practice may have limited places or require an additional enquiry, referral or application.

By the time you attend your first hospital appointment, some of these options may already be full.

This isn’t about suggesting that one model of maternity care is better than another.

It’s about understanding your options early, asking questions and learning what feels right for you.

As a birth doula and childbirth educator, I believe these conversations are an important part of the pregnancy journey.

Save this post so you can return to the question:

“What maternity care options are available where I live, and how and when do I apply?”

Share it with someone in early pregnancy who may need this information. And let me know in the comments: were your maternity care options explained to you?

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the information that comes with early pregnancy, you’re not alone.

My FREE Masterclass, 5 Steps for a Positive Mindset During Pregnancy, was created to help you explore clarity, mindset, preparation and building the support that feels right for you.

For generations, birth in Sumba has been surrounded by women, family and community.

Mothers, grandmothers and female relatives traditionally support the birthing woman, often alongside a traditional birth attendant.

Birth is deeply connected to family, culture and tradition and the care doesn’t stop when the baby arrives.

The new mother is cared for by the women around her, given time to rest, recover and bond with her baby, while traditional knowledge is passed from one generation to the next.

In communities across Sumba, particularly in more remote areas, traditional birth attendants and practices continue to play an important role today.

The beautiful traditional weaving of Sumba is another example of knowledge and skills being passed from one generation to the next.

Different traditions.
But women caring for women remains ❤️

Imagine having a pregnancy conversation guide to help you pause, sort through your thoughts and better understand what you need from the people supporting you.

During pregnancy, it is not always easy to explain what you need to your birth team, especially when there is so much on your mind.

The Pregnancy Conversation Guide inside The Birth Coach Method™ supports your birth preparation by helping you explore what support could look like for you, gather your questions and prepare for meaningful conversations with:

❤️Your care provider
❤️Your partner
❤️Your support person
❤️Your doula
❤️Your birth team

It gives you space to gain clarity around your needs and feel more prepared to express them.

So you can walk into prenatal appointments with your thoughts gathered, ask the questions that matter to you and help your birth team understand how they can support you.

Because birth preparation is also about communication, connection and building supportive relationships with the people around you.

Created by Nikki, a birth doula and childbirth educator, The Pregnancy Conversation Guide forms part of The Birth Coach Method™ signature birth preparation experience.

One question.
One conversation.
One step at a time. ❤️
