You’ve had the conversation many times.

Just not with the person you need to have it with.

In your head, you explain yourself clearly. They listen. You finally say what you’ve been holding back.

Then the real moment comes.

You soften it. Change the subject. Say, “It’s fine.” Decide the timing isn’t right.

Sometimes we aren’t waiting for the right words. We’re waiting for some guarantee that the conversation won’t go badly.

That guarantee rarely comes.

The more useful question may be: what is staying silent beginning to cost you?

“Can you please just do it without me having to ask again?”

“I said I’d do it.”

“But you always say that.”

It may have started with dishes, dinner or something that needed organising.

Within minutes, it’s no longer about the task.

One person is fighting to feel considered. The other is defending themselves against feeling criticised. Each response confirms what the other already fears.

Somewhere in that exchange, the problem stops being something you’re facing together.

It becomes you against me.

Finding your way back to being a team doesn’t mean agreeing about everything. It means learning to face the difficulty without turning your partner into the difficulty.

You don’t need to know exactly what to say before contacting a counsellor.

You might only know that you keep having the same fight. That you’ve become distant. That anxiety is taking up too much room. Or that you no longer feel quite like yourself.

That’s enough to begin a conversation.

Part of my job is to help make sense of what is happening—not to expect you to arrive having already worked it out.

If you’re unsure whether I’m the right person to speak with, you can book a free 15-minute Clarity Call. We’ll talk briefly about what is happening and whether working together seems appropriate.

There’s no pressure to proceed.

My practice has evolved over the past few years. The way I present it needed to catch up.

I’ve recently become a PACFA Registered Clinical Counsellor and launched a new website that reflects my work more clearly.

I work with individuals and couples who know something important isn’t working, but may not yet know how to change it.

That might mean recurring conflict, growing distance, anxiety, emotional reactivity, or feeling stuck in ways that are becoming difficult to shift.

The new website explains more about how I work: warm, direct and collaborative, with attention to what is happening beneath the surface and what can change in everyday life.

If you’d like to have a look: https://www.uribookman.com/

A couple may think they’re arguing about money, the dishes or what happened on Saturday.

But underneath, another conversation is often taking place.

One person is trying to say, “I don’t feel considered.”

The other hears, “You’ve failed again.”

So one pushes harder to be understood. The other becomes defensive or shuts down. Before long, they’re arguing about tone rather than what actually mattered.

The topic may change next week. The pattern usually doesn’t.

It can help to slow the moment down and notice:

What did I hear?

What happened in me?

What did I do next?

That’s often where a different conversation becomes possible.

Sometimes our strongest reactions trace back to our smallest selves—the parts of us that just wanted to be seen, heard, and held.

Time and time again in couples sessions, I’ve watched how conflict unfolds from wounded little girls and boys inside. When we each learn to nurture and protect that innocent part of ourselves, the mature adults in the room can address the issue together—with compassion, presence, and clarity.

It’s easy to fall into those old patterns—the ones outlined in the Karpman Drama Triangle (Victim, Rescuer, Persecutor)—that keep us stuck in emotional drama. But healing happens when the adult steps in, tending to those unmet needs, and choosing a different path forward.

Vulnerability like this transforms relationships from the inside out. I’ve written more about it in my latest blog—an invitation to sit gently with your inner child and transform connection.

🌟 Anxiety as Your Teacher 🌟

Living with anxiety is so tough—it can be incredibly isolating, draining your energy and clouding your every thought. It feels like an ever-present shadow, and the weight of it can be overwhelming. But what if, instead of viewing anxiety as an enemy, you could start seeing it as a teacher?

When you stop fighting anxiety and start leaning in with curiosity, you can begin to understand what it's trying to tell you. Anxiety often stems from past wounds or the constant anticipation of the future, but it’s also a signal that you’re not fully present.

💡 Ask yourself: What is my anxiety trying to teach me? What need of mine is not being met? Where am I right now—am I dwelling in the past, worrying about the future, or staying grounded in the present? Am I aligned with my core values and true purpose?

Instead of pushing it away, try staying with it. Allow yourself to sit with the sensations without judgment. You may find that your anxiety guides you toward deeper understanding and greater self-compassion.

Since you never know what another person is going through, please be compassionate and bring kindness and support to those you interact with. Your empathy and presence could make all the difference.

Ready to explore how anxiety can be a powerful guide on your journey? I’ve shared some simple, practical tools to help you turn anxiety into a teacher rather than a foe.

Read more about this transformative approach in my latest blog post: Anxiety: Your Unexpected Teacher.

The thing I love the most about working with individuals or couples is watching them put in the hard work to tend to the garden and then see them blossom like flowers.

I have full trust in the process.

We nurture the garden. 🌏
Dig the ground. 💪
Pull out the weeds. 🌿
Sprinkle some seeds (and glitter) ✨
Feed with compost. 🌱
Water with love. 💦
Trust the sun will shine. 🌤
blossom they will. 🌺🌸🌼

Spring is in the air. Are you ready to tend to your garden?

I only have 3 spots available before I’m full for August. Is one of them yours? 🧞
