SKIING SUCCESS// Twenty-five students from Oxley College have contested the annual NSW/QLD/ACT State Championships in Perisher this week.

Oxley College has been represented in each event, with seven individuals and three teams already qualifying for the 2026 Australian Championships also to be held in Perisher next month.

The College continued its strong tradition in Cross Country Skiing, with the Division 2 team of Sapphire, Ellie and Madison qualifying for Nationals in the Classic and Relay events, while the Division 5 team of Elsie, Harper and Georgie also qualifying their team for the next stage.

Albert (Division 3) was the highest placed individual in the Classic event, finished fifth, and adding to his second placing in the NSW Laser Biathlon Schools Event earlier in the week.

In the downhill events, it was outstanding to see Ethan compete across four disciplines, while Felix, Madison and Albert each contested three.

It was especially pleasing to see so many students competing in their first NSW/QLD/ACT State Championships, including Charlotte, Taylor, Maximus, Theodore, Madeline and Imogen, while Lila from Kindergarten was the youngest competitor by six months in the Cross Country events.

FACING HISTORY// On Monday, Year 9 and Year 10 History students took part in powerful and thought-provoking seminars with genocide historian Dr Ari Lander as part of their study of the Holocaust.
Through survivor testimony and historical evidence, Dr Lander encouraged students to look beyond the familiar narrative and consider the complexity of human behaviour.
One student reflected:
“The most interesting part was when he talked about interviews with survivors. Presenting them as people with thoughts and feelings beyond simply what they’re known for.”
Students explored the experiences of those who lived through the Holocaust, including survivor Esther Raad of Sobibor, as well as the perspectives of perpetrators such as Franz Stangl through Gitta Sereny’s in-depth interviews.
The seminar challenged students to think critically about how history is understood, remembered and represented - while developing empathy for those who experienced one of the darkest periods of human history.

LEARNING THROUGH STORIES// As part of our ELEVATE program, our Year 5 and Year 6 students are encouraged to look beyond the curriculum, think deeply and make connections between what they learn and the world around them.

Earlier this week, our Year 5 students stepped into the world of Shakespeare with the Bell Shakespeare Company, exploring A Midsummer Night’s Dream through storytelling, character work and language. The workshop challenged students to build their vocabulary, think creatively and critically.

For Year 6, a visit to the Bradman Museum brought their Term 3 Unit of Inquiry, Legends and Legacies, to life. Exploring the story of Sir Donald Bradman gave students the opportunity to consider how an individual’s achievements can shape the history, identity and legacy of a place.

It is this combination of academic challenge and real-world experience that makes ELEVATE distinctive - helping our students grow in confidence, curiosity and perspective as they prepare for the opportunities and challenges of Senior School.

YOUTH COUNCIL// This week, Oxley College was proud to host the Wingecarribee Shire Youth Council meeting, bringing together student representatives from ten educational institutions across the Southern Highlands.
Chaired by Year Oxley students Orson and Ruby, the summit gave young people the opportunity to have their say on issues shaping the future of our region, including housing, infrastructure, environmental sustainability and the financial sustainability of local government.
We were also pleased to welcome Wingecarribee Mayor Jesse Fitzpatrick, giving students a direct connection to local decision-making and an opportunity to engage with the people shaping our community.
As Orson reflected: “Meetings like this are essential for ensuring that young people can contribute their ideas and voice into the region where they live.”
The meeting provided a valuable learning experience, giving students the opportunity to think critically, listen to different perspectives and contribute to conversations about the future of their community.
Well done to Orson and Ruby for their confident and generous leadership, and thank you to all the participating schools, TAFE and Wingecarribee Shire Council for being part of the conversation.

CENTRE FOR ETHICS// Last Thursday evening, our Centre for Ethics Speaker Series welcomed award-winning Australian journalist, broadcaster and author Indira Naidoo to Oxley for an inspiring conversation about sustainability, community and the small choices that shape the way we live.

Indira spoke with warmth and clarity about the power of gardens to connect people. What began with a few edible pots on her balcony grew into something much bigger, reminding us that small acts of care can create connection and strengthen communities.

She also reminded us that living well isn't necessarily about making big changes. It can begin with paying attention, caring for what is around us and recognising the impact our small choices can have on others.

Earlier in the evening, Indira spent time with our Gibraltar Society students, who had the opportunity to explore some of the tensions facing journalism today, from the pressure of clickbait and competing for attention to the true cost of producing quality journalism.

APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCEMENT// Today, Mr Mark Case shared with our community the appointment of Ms Philipa (Pip) Peters as Deputy Head and Head of Senior School, commencing in January 2027.

Since joining Oxley in 2025 as Head of Monash House, a teacher of Philosophy and Cornerstone, and more recently the additional role of Study Skills Co-ordinator, Pip has quickly become a valued and respected member of our community. Her leadership, integrity, wisdom and warmth have made a lasting impression on students, staff and families.

Pip brings extensive leadership experience across Australian and international independent schools, including as Deputy Head of Senior School at Island School in Hong Kong, and has a deep understanding of what makes Oxley such a special place.

We are delighted to see Pip take on this new Executive role and look forward to the experience, energy and vision she will bring to College life.

INTERNATIONALISM IN ACTION// Over the past two weeks, our Oxley community has had the pleasure of welcoming three exchange students, Romane from France, Jona from Germany, and Victor from Sweden.

They've travelled across the world to experience life at Oxley and in Australia, immersing themselves in our classrooms, co-curricular programs and everyday school life while being warmly welcomed by their host families.

As a Round Square school, we believe some of life's most valuable lessons and character are developed through experience. International exchanges are a powerful example of experiential learning in action, building global perspectives, resilience, empathy and lifelong friendships. These experiences enrich not only our visitors, but our entire school community.

It has been wonderful for Mr Case to officially welcome Romane, Jona and Victor to Oxley, and we hope they create memories that will last a lifetime.
