This term, our 3-6 students have been learning about animal life cycles and informative texts through a very special hands-on experience, raising monarch butterflies from caterpillars all the way through to adulthood.

The students carefully observed each stage of the butterfly life cycle: caterpillar, chrysalis, and butterfly. Throughout the process, they used their scientific observation skills to notice changes over time, record information, ask questions, and discuss what they discovered. Students also linked their learning to our English unit by reading informative texts, learning scientific vocabulary, and creating their own written responses about life cycles and adaptations.

Today, we celebrated the end of our learning journey by releasing the butterflies back into the wild. The students loved watching them spread their wings and fly away after weeks of caring for and observing them. This experience provided such a meaningful opportunity for students to connect their classroom learning to the real world while developing responsibility, patience, and respect for living things. πŸ¦‹

πŸ“’ Important cyber safety update for Queensland school communities πŸ“’

You may have seen media reports about a global cyber security incident affecting Canvas, an online learning platform used by educational institutions worldwide.

Canvas is used in Queensland state schools for staff and student training.

Current advice from the third-party provider Instructure is that names, email addresses and school locations for staff and students since 2020 may be implicated.

We have received repeated assurances that financial information and passwords are not at risk.

While investigations continue, one of the most immediate risks is likely to be phishing and scam activity using compromised contact information.

A few practical reminders for staying safe online:
πŸ“± Be cautious of unexpected emails, text messages or phone calls requesting information or urging urgent action.
πŸ”— Avoid clicking suspicious links or downloading attachments unless you can verify the source.
πŸ’» Monitor your accounts for unusual activity.
πŸ”’ Limit sharing personal information, particularly in response to unsolicited contact.

We're continuing to work closely with cyber security authorities and the third-party provider as investigations continue.

We recognise this information may be concerning for staff, students and families. For ongoing updates, support and online safety resources, please visit: https://qed.qld.gov.au/about-us/news-and-media/instructure-cyber-security-update

At our school, staff wellbeing is something we actively nurture and celebrate every day πŸ’›

Our Wellbeing Tree is a beautiful way for staff to show gratitude to one another. Each message is specifically written for another staff member, acknowledging their hard work, effort, and the positive impact they have on those around them. Throughout the semester, team members add leaves filled with kind words, recognition, and appreciation for the actions they see every day. It’s a growing reminder of the supportive culture we’re building together.

We also love our Staff Shout Out Wall! Each week, staff can acknowledge a colleague by completing a shout-out template highlighting something meaningful they’ve done. During staff meetings, a few are shared, and those recognised are featured on our wall with their photo and the reason for their shout-out β€” celebrating the everyday moments that make a big difference.

And for a little extra joy, we have our Jar of Joy. Staff add notes about funny, uplifting, or positive moments from their week, which we read together at meetings to bring smiles, laughter, and connection.
These simple practices help us stay connected, supported, and focused on the positives β€” because when our staff feel valued, our whole school community thrives 🌿

πŸ”¬βœ¨ Street Science Visit βœ¨πŸ”¬

On Tuesday, we had a fantastic visit from the Street Science team! Students were amazed as they watched a range of exciting and interactive experiments led by Dr Sharon, there were plenty of β€œwow” moments throughout the session!

Students also had the opportunity to use microscopes to take a closer look at some of the living things around our school, sparking curiosity and a deeper understanding of the world around them.

We always look forward to visits from the Street Science team, their hands-on, engaging approach makes learning so much fun and inspires a love of science in our students. Thank you for another amazing experience! 🌟
